"Ghenwa & Laila” is a Lebanese duo composed of musician Ghenwa NemNom and Dj Laila Sarkis, aka Djette. The two started a collaboration in 2020 and cultivated their signature sound by fusing the traditional Qanun (an Arabic string instrument and descendant of the old Egyptian harp) with deep electronic dance rhythms.

Ghenwa joined the National Lebanese Conservatory at eight years old, where she learned to master the Qanun. She continued her artistic journey at Oakland University in Michigan a decade later. Ghenwa is challenging the status quo and paving the way for an instrument that may be considered old-fashioned and limited to the traditional oriental music scene.

Djette has been making noise on the Beirut Dj scene since the early 2000s; she is notorious for her smile, good energy, and wide music selection. Djette is also a co-founder of Beirut’s legendary “Cotton Candy” party. She has held multiple club residencies over the decades in The Basement, Centrale, The Grand Factory, Garten, Skybar and Iris, to name a few.

As a duo, “Ghenwa & Laila” successfully crafted a unique musical experience for their audience in the SWANA region. Their heart is now set on taking this project West. The duo also aspires to inspire young girls in their region to pursue their artistic dreams.

Most parts of the world are in a state of isolation right now and the whole situation makes me confused, worried and thoughtful.

But what seems to me the most appropriate question is whats coming next? Do our societies learn out of this crisis? I think the time has come for more humanity and humility. The opportunity for more love and mindfulness in this world has come. I really hope that we start thinking less about ourselves and start to understand the world as a whole. 

Here, I'm sharing with you my - musical - Reflection on Mindfulness which has been recorded on Saturday night in my studio. I hope you'll resonate with it.

Madam Lola is a multidisciplinary artist, entertainer, and one-woman show who takes her audience on a journey to new worlds, through a fully immersive experience of music, performance, visual art, and design.

Madam Lola was born in Tehran, Iran and later moved to Istanbul, Turkey as a refugee. It was in Turkey that she began her career as a DJ & Performer, and where she quickly gained traction as a staple amongst the festival and nightlife scenes, focusing primarily on the Techno and Psychedelic genres.

In 2015 she packed up her life and moved to Canada where she now calls Vancouver home.

Madam Lola’s love of music transcends genres, and because she didn’t want to limit herself, she began embracing various styles of music and experimenting with different sounds. Now she enjoys playing different electronic music genres including Melodic House/Techno, Tech-house, and House.

After only a few years Madam Lola became an Icon in Canada’s LGBTQ community and began DJing & performing next to amazing musical artists including Franky Wah, Shiba San, ARTBAT, Fisher, Rasi Z, DAVI and at festivals which include the Contact Winter Music Festival 2022 and Whistler Pride & Ski Festival.

She is also the founder of her own unique event called “HAREM” and is one of the preeminent DJs who play Downtempo, Afro-House, and Organic music in the Vancouver nightlife scene.

Madam Lola draws influence from the beauty found in many different cultures and genres, from East to West, that she uses to tell a captivating story of music and dance which will keep you mesmerized all night long.
Madam Lola is currently working on music production with the goal of soon releasing her first EP.
