Vieux Farka Touré et Khruangbin - Savanne

Released on white vinyl 7" for RSD14, full release on 9th June 2014.

Khruangbin is a three-piece band from Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums.

Mark and DJ's roots are in R&B, Hip Hop and Gospel having played within the same gospel band for years. Both professional musicians, Mark began teaching Laura how to play bass in the summer of 2009. As such, Laura quickly developed a huge passion for the instrument and the aesthetic it brought to music she loved. Having worked studiously on developing her skills, both Mark and Laura were invited to tour with Ninja Tune's YPPAH supporting Bonobo across his 2010 American tour. 

The tour galvanised the two of them to start making music together more seriously, sowing the first seeds of Khruangbin. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - Khruangbin literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - the two took a trip to a barn deep in the Texas countryside and jammed for the entire weekend, developing a sound which was steeped the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration. Khruangbin was formed, with D.J. the natural go to for drums.

Having kept in touch, Bonobo included Khruangbin's 'A Calf Born In Winter' on his 2013 'Late Night Tales' compilation. In addition to increasing the Stateside following the band has built, the release has helped Khruangbin in topping both the US & UK 'Last FM' fastest growing artists whilst 'A Calf Born In Winter' continues to be one of the most popular single downloads from the compilation. The band recently signed to LNT offshoot Night Time Stories, with an album planned in 2015.

"Housed in a remote Texan barn, Khruangbin seem to bury deep within themselves.  Sounding like little else around - a colourful fusion of groove-based crate-digging and blistering psych - the band fused their sound from lengthy, exhausting rehearsals.

Lauded by Bonobo, debut single 'A Calf Born In Winter' has become a cult favourite. Utilising the flexibility of jazz but with something almost approaching the directness of hip hop, the group's instrumental prowess is matched to an astute song writing ability. 

New EP 'The Infamous Bill' drops on October 6th via Late Night Tales side label Night Time Stories, a wide ranging exposition of this Texan trio. Recalling the easy-going funk of The Meters but with a very modern attitude, Clash is able to premiere the title cut and it's a winner."

UPDATE: The winners of the DJ Shadow remix contest have been announced! I'm not one of them, but it was great to hear the ones that shadow picked. So glad Archive's Waltz version was in the ranks, played that on my KCRW show on Wednesday. I'm not bummed one bit, everyone who Shadow picked killed it in their own way, and since I only set out to make what I consider to be a beautiful song... I feel successful in that. Recently re-released on Colemine Records, by The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn NY.
I've extended the intro and far too short break, and added a few tweaks to increase the playing time.
Also had to add some wise words from Herbie Hancock at the beginning to get round the copyright filter.
