OPAL, the third release of my series Minerals, is a collaboration with guitarist Francesca Naibo.

MINERALS (started in 2020) is a series in which Maddalena Ghezzi aims to explore vocal, compositional and scoring possibilities while dissecting the act of collaboration. Ghezzi wants to take snapshots of her artistic collaborations and build, through the years, a compilation of varied and versatile exchanges.
All the works are recorded in different spaces, decided by each collaborator, to capture a diverse range of room sounds and are released at random intervals whenever the ground is right for new ideas to sprout.

Eŭropo: sen limoj is an album in 8 languages with lyrics written by 8 women on the theme Europe and recorded at Guscio Recording Studio, Milan. The album wants to paint a picture of contemporary Europe from 8 women’s prospective. This is a human journey without borders that aims to bring the listener on a path through positive and negative emotions to reach hope, understanding and connection. 

Eŭropo: sen limoj was conceived in Brexit Britain, where Maddalena Ghezzi (voice) lives. As an immigrant and a daughter of the open borders Europe that allowed her to build her life in another country, she was concerned about her future and felt increasingly uncomfortable in her surroundings. She asked some friends that shared with her the freedom that comes with movement, to contribute their thoughts. The lyrics created an interesting female led narrative of Europe as a continent, as a mythological woman and exposed contemporary feelings of melancholy and unsettlement. After experimenting with the lyrics in a FUWAH’s gig in London; FUWAH took at heart to write an eclectic, different and various musical journey to these lyrics. Together we created Eŭropo: sen limoj (Europe with no limits/borders). Both the title and the tracks’ names are in Esperanto and they have been ordered according to an hypothetical physical journey from Portugalio to Unuiĝinta Reĝlando through Hispanio, Francio, Italio, Grekio, Hungario and Germanio. This is only the beginning; we would love to expand the project and include more women from different backgrounds in the narrative.

MINERALS is a series of collaborations with musicians I love. The aim of the series is to take a snapshot of my artistic interactions at the moment of recording. Each work will be released at random intervals, whenever the ground is right for another collaboration to sprout.

AMETHYST is a collaboration with double bass player Thodoris Ziarkas. Together we share the love of plants and the natural world. Improvisation was used as a method of composition as well as during the recording. I had loads of fun using a delay pedal to create different atmospheres in the wonderful space (The Intimate Space) chosen by Thodoris.

I am very thankful to Barney J Spigel for his enthusiasm and his great skills recording in random places :)

HALITE is a collaboration with pianist Ed Blunt. Ed and I have been collaborating for many years in Stanza Da Tre where we explore songs in different languages from different traditions and genres. I have the pleasure to sing in Ed's choir, Camden Voices. Our creative connection has developed not only in music but also in art and illustration with our series "Stations of the World" published on Conde Nast Traveller China.
