CUTS THE MUSTARD (anniversary edition)

Something from the dusty archives - my first proper mixtape! Recorded in late 2001 using two mini-discs  (because I didn’t have a computer). Not long after, someone I knew (who had a PC) burned a few CDs to hand out, and off the back of that I got my first proper gig doing a warm up set for The High & Mighty / Smutt Peddlers (Mr Eon, Copyright & Cage) at The Cavern Club in Exeter. Got to thank Lord Louis for putting me on - what a night that was! Anyway, enough of the reminiscing. Be under no illusion, this mix ain’t smooth or technical. It’s simply full of roughneck badass underground rap being crudely cut up on the 1s and 2s. That said, If you like rugged 90s hip-hop you’re in for a treat - It bangs hard!

Turntablist Extraordinaire @dj-yoda-uk graced the Rabbit Hole's 'FUNKINGHAM PALACE' - performing a bespoke 'GET DOWN  DJ SET' filled with Funk / Hip-Hop and lots of samples!

"Here's a live recording of my set at Glastonbury 2017, keeping it pretty tightly themed to The Get Down - i.e. early 1980s NYC block party music! This was great fun - loved sticking to the theme, and by 20 minutes in it felt more like we were in the Bronx in 1984 by than a tent in a field in Somerset! Excuse some of the dodgy mixing moments, this was all live! Enjoy, and wear full adidas tracksuit to appreciate entirely  :) "

DJ YODA (THE GET DOWN DJ SET)- Live from The Rabbit Hole's 'Funkingham Palace' - June 2017

Whilst having a hard drive clearout I found a bunch of my early mixes that I hadn't listened to in a long time. Some have stood the test of time pretty well, others - not so much :)

This first one was based on a mix I originally recorded in 2002 for a 'Bedroom DJ' competition, then re-recorded in 2004 to tidy up a few bits I was unhappy with (when I moved to Exeter and was using this on CD to get gigs). It's the mixtape that started it all for me :)

"The Payback Mix (Pt. 1)" is still one of my favourites - an hour of non-stop heavy hip hop, ragga, and classic beats and breaks on an early Ninja Tune tip. I couldn't scratch for shit back then, but the mixing is tight. This is from back in the days when I used a portable minidisc player alongside my 1210's to drop samples(!)
