Marked by Sidhe is movement five of Mattie Tempio's song cycle, Between Waking and Sleep (for solo voice and chamber orchestra).

Marked by Sidhe

This piece is inspired by and based around the Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant in the Cygnus constellation. I processed the picture of the nebula (released by NASA on September 24, 2015) in an image-to-sound program, which created a roughly five-second sample, which I then sent through spectral analysis software. The fixed media part is a layered and distorted version of the original sample; it includes a bass layer, which is the sample time stretched for the duration of the piece, the second is a layer of repeated time-stretched version of the sample, and a rhythmic layer that focuses on pitch- and speed- distorted versions of the final two seconds of the sample. The flute part draws both pitch content and melodic figures from this backing track.

Monologue

Mattie Tempio (b. 1996) is a composer based in Denton, Texas, and holds a Bachelor's of Music from the University of North Texas, where she studied with Dr. Sungji Hong, Dr. Kirsten Broberg, and Dr. Seth Shafer. Her list of works ranges from solos, chamber, symphony orchestra, film, and live electronic systems and fixed media; she has had readings with the UNT Symphony Orchestra, as well as performances in UNT CEMI’s Spectrum concert series.
