Charlie Don't Surf's writing process involved a series of exploratory improv sessions. We would record these sessions so that we could go back and listen, review, and critique it. We'd all listen independently and the next time we met we'd find out if there was anything that we all universally liked... From there, we'd start tracking more targeted/focused sessions until it became polished enough to perform/release.

Videor - No Reservation

I've started writing and recording music using an iPad as my primary recording device. This is a sort of creative exercise to help me stay focused on content and ideas rather than the technical aspects of the recording process that the recording engineer in me tends to get so caught up in. Disappointed is the first song in what I am hoping to make a series of recordings dubbed the iPad Seshunz.

iPad Seshunz - Disappointed

I had the opportunity to team up with IVthePolymath (@conneckiv) and create an original piece of music. As it turns out, he can play a drum kit and keys rather proficiently. We kinda rocked out for a while and then this song sort of happened. I could have spent a lot more time on this and made it sound polished but I think the rough edges do justice to the process and the overall story of the session.

I started working on a sort of stoner doom metal-ish EP last year. I've got five solid concepts, I just need to finish fleshing them out. These are previews of what I'm working on at the moment. This is the opening track for the EP. Originally intended to be a split, I quickly realized that these tracks are going to be too long.

This track started out as a drum and bass improv studio session with Bryan on drums and myself on bass. We've been playing together for years and are a good fit musically. I often call him up and have him come into the studio so we can jam out various ideas that I've been sitting on. Once the session is over, I spend the next couple of days or weeks filling out the piece with various instruments until it feels like a song. I am pleased with how this track came out. The drums and bass sound extremely tight and aggressive which is one of the perks of recording both instruments together at the same time. This track will eventually be part of an EP that I will title Adult Onset Complacency.
