Via Little White Earbuds

Pundits have grown fond of the term “outsider house” to describe artists whose aesthetic is rougher around the edges, but they forget that dance music at its core was created by and for outsiders: racial and sexual minorities who escaped the cruel world by getting lost in music — first disco and then house. Marea Vierge-Noire, a Kentucky-born, Chicago-based DJ and producer, knows this well. Diving into the rave scene as a teenager to retreat from bruising bullying, Vierge-Noire found herself at home dancing and selling mixtapes in warehouses around the American Midwest. Her DJing career began by chance when someone caught her practicing alone, but has earned her notoriety across three decades, most recently as a resident at Smart Bar, Chicago’s reigning nightclub. Vierge-Noire’s raving past landed her a job working for the mammoth (though now defunct) Dust Traxx empire and provided the knowledge base for starting producing in the mid-aughts. Initially collaborator by necessity, she can now be found producing on her own as the Black Madonna for Home Taping Is Killing Music, Stripped & Chewed, and a growing list of well regarded labels. Standing as a shining example of how outsiders are the true insiders in dance music, LWE sat down with Veirge-Noire to discuss the paths that brought her here, why disco is so dear to her, and what the future holds for her. She also mixed LWE’s 156th exclusive podcast, a thrilling hour of danceable music which encapsulates her body-moving DJ style.

When I'm on tour travelling I like to do edits. While waiting in airports, cars, vans, trains, customs, hotels, soundchecks I do them. This is one of my favourites.

They may only be about to drop their second release but  Organic Analogue  are already a label to be reckoned with. When your first release comes with a Heinrich Mueller remix, your releases come on stunningly-designed heavyweight clear vinyl, your website has a moving starscape, and you release tracks like this one  from Tblisi, Georgia , you basically have our attention. OA002 features four tracks plus a remix by  The Reflektor aka Gifted & Blessed , but this is our pick - a cosmic bubblebath of undulating tones and gliding rhythm that we defy you to resist.

HVL "Cygnus Loop" - Boiler Room Debuts

Max Graef's still unfuckwithable 2014 debut    Rivers of the Red Planet  was the site of various pleasures. It had smoked-out soul by the blunt-load. It juggled boom-bap with neo-soul and rubbed together dusty jazz with the heft of house. It was the kind of statement record where a young producer was able to lay out his aesthetic touchstones and play them off each other in casual synthesis. It was also where we had the pleasure of meeting Nigerian-born vocalist extrordinaire Wayne Snow – an androgynous, mellifluous falsetto that wound perfectly into Max's half-time haze.    

After expanding album standout 'Running' into a fully-fleshed EP, the pair continue the chemistry with 'Rosie' – a new five-tracker coming out via Copenhagen label and shared home Tartelet Records. We're glad to say the same magic's still there in spades – the thick thud of Graef's signature kick, the warbling warm basslines and ever the star of the show, Wayne's tenderly acrobatic vocal lines.

Submotion Orchestra - 'Doppelgänger'

One of the catalysts for this whole project has been the work of El Búho. I was already familiar with his production and remix work (for the uninitiated check out his mesmerising remix of Chancha Via Circuito - Sueno en Paraguay) when I stumbled across his ‘’Roots & Rhythms’’ podcasts. I was blown away. He was compiling, on such a regular basis, a vast range of beautiful music and sharing it with the world. I hoped that I could too help share the music that I love and support these amazing artists.

Unsurprisingly El Búho was one of the first people I contacted about contributing to the series, so it is with great pleasure that I am now able to present to you his Métron Musik Mixtape. It’s as smooth and peaceful a journey as it is a beautiful and triumphant rural adventure across many sonic worlds, finding it’s final peak at the very last moments with an outstanding unreleased track of his own. Inspired by the mystical notion of musical nirvana, it’s a vivid depiction of a small part of the sonic universe, but one that feels very much at one with his impressive output to date.

Esther

Invisible City Editions is a cult reissue label based in Toronto, Canada. Run by Brandon Hocura and Gary Abugan, it puts out long overlooked or lost gems, much needed reissues and rare disco delights that immediately get snapped up by record collectors around the world. The men behind it are obviously avid diggers themselves, and really know how to pull out amazing records from many different genres. As such they also make for an amazing DJ team who surprise and shock, delight and entertain whenever they play. 

The sun scorched mix they have put together for us proves that: it is a truly worldly selection that marries off kilter funk with organic hand drums, afro futurism with house music’s sense of groove. Despite touching on so many diverse and hard to describe styles and left of centre melodies, it is all expertly tied together and perfectly sequenced so as to make for a truly different and distinctive ride.

After our first release via ZZK records 2 years ago, History of Colour, a collaboration project between El Búho and Barrio Lindo, returns with our second release, "Calidoso". The 4 track EP explores new sonic landscapes for us both, inspired by slow-dance and flitting between andean folk, marimba, electronica and organic sounds.

The music was co-created by Robin (El Búho) and Agustín (Barrio Lindo) in January over emails and Dropboxes between Buenos Aires & Mexico DF and mastered by our good friend Nicola Cruz based in Quito, Ecuador.

The artwork is a fragment of a gorgeous mural called called "Historia del tiempo" from Buenos Aires by the Argentine artist Elías Santis.

Blip Discs' very own O'Flynn first dropped onto our radar with last year's Tyrion / Desmond's Empire, which received numerous accolades from many electronic music pros. James Blake and Pearson Sound are included, and Four Tet is quoted to have even said that he "literally could not put that record down. It's going off everywhere I play it."

News of O'Flynn's second EP brings an excitement so palpable, we at HQ are jumping at the opportunity to back it. The Oberyn / Spyglass EP embodies that same O'Flynn spirit of laidback dance music we got well acquainted with the first time around. A sound so in vogue, we even dedicated a podcast to it last year. After James Blake dropped the A-side on his BBC Radio One residency, we were keen to get our mitts on the other track. Lo and behold – we present "Spyglass"! An insatiable groove of (surprisingly un-cheesy) sax and purple-tinged synth patterns, mellower in nature when compared to its bouncy exotic "Oberyn" counterpart. Another successful yield from one of dance music's most prosperous newcomers.

O'Flynn "Spyglass" - Boiler Room Debuts

For those of you not yet acquainted with Quincy Vidal, now's the time. The Brooklyn duo comprises of Le'Asha Julius and Caleb Eberhardt (CE), who combine their vocal, MCing and production skills in their soulful, thought-provoking and truly original creations. "No style is more present than the singular, alive and confident voices of Quincy Vidal. Day-in-the-life odysseys through a fiercely modern take on Golden Age hip hop" – still stands as the most succinct description of QV's music.

Chi'ren is the latest project emanating from New York's notorious two-piece. With production credits split between CE and Space People, the EP's seven tracks unearth musical memories from the nineties, through to the noughties and tens. Le'Asha and Caleb's anecdotal lyrics touch on love, anger, sex, betrayal, and – along with the wolf boy artwork – the loss of childhood innocence. A theme that resonates deeply coming from two young-blood virtuosos of NYC hip hop, and it doesn't even end there. Styles Upon Styles is releasing an early download of the EP alongside a limited edition hoodie which features the cover art. A portion of the proceeds will then be donated to Food Bank NYC.

Quincy Vidal's Chi'ren will be available on all digital music stores come April Fool's Day.
