I surveyed the obliterated landscape from my shadowy vantage point, high up to the west of the city. The furthest I could get from the patrols without straying into the toxic zone. Everything was destroyed, including my will to go on, I was defeated. Smoke and ash hung in the air, suffocating the land like a murderous blanket smothering its victim. The crumbling remains of buildings tore up through the haze like the jagged teeth of giants long dead.
We were all but wiped out and now I could see the patrols, crawling over the wreckage like... I wish I could say “like Ants”, but it's been so long since anyone has seen one, that I can no longer be sure.
The Awakened, searching, seeking out any dissent, bringing us back to the fold for “re-education”. This was how it had played out, how it was always going to play out. It was all over, all over now...
