The Niyamas (Sanskrit: नियम, romanized: Niyama) are positive duties or observances. In Dharma, particularly Yoga, niyamas and their complement, Yamas, are recommended activities and habits for healthy living, spiritual enlightenment, and a liberated state of existence. It has multiple meanings depending on context in Hinduism. In Buddhism, the term extends to the determinations of nature, as in the Buddhist niyama dhammas.

Virtues are extensively discussed in various ancient and medieval era texts of Hinduism. In its Yoga school, they are described in first two of eight limbs (steps, branches, components). The first limb is called yamas, which include virtuous self-restraints (the "don'ts"). The second limb is called niyamas which include virtuous habits, behaviors and observances (the "dos").
These virtues and ethical premises are considered in Hinduism as necessary for an individual to achieve a self-realized, enlightened, liberated state of existence (moksha).

In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the Niyamas are the second limb of the eight limbs of Yoga. Sadhana Pada Verse 32 lists the niyamas as:

- Shaucha (शौच): purity, clearness of mind, speech and body
- Santosha (सन्तोष): contentment, acceptance of others and of one's circumstances as they are, optimism for self
- Tapas (तपस्): austerity, self-discipline, persistent meditation, perseverance
- Svadhyaya (स्वाध्याय): study of self, self-reflection, introspection of self's thoughts, speeches and actions
- Ishvarapranidhana (ईश्वरप्रणिधान): contemplation of the Ishvara (God/Supreme Being, Brahman, True Self, Unchanging Reality), attunement to the supreme consciousness

Are you lost?” Though unusual, the lions weren’t unfriendly, so Dragon settled down and told them the whole story — being born, living in the forest, meeting Minli, and now their travels to find the borrowed line and the Old Man of the Moon. The lions didn’t interrupt once, though the cub did snicker from time to time. “You belonged to Magistrate Tiger?” the cub said, when Dragon finished. “That means you’re the terrible dragon! You’re the one that destroyed the king’s father’s palace. What a lot of trouble you caused!” Dragon looked at the older lions questionigly. Filmus pays his respect to Alexandria and Pleiades. This is his second offering for Shango Records. These two tracks can reveal the beauty of history and mythology. Cedro and Madma are dreamers with pale blue eyes.

It was then Minli saw the four long gashes bleeding on Dragon’s arm. The tiger’s claws had been sharp and the slashes were deep. Minli shook herself and brushed her tears away. “You’re hurt,” Minli said, looking at the cuts, which were already starting to swell. “It is all right,” Dragon said. “Don’t worry. Dragons heal quickly.” They walked back into the cave and Minli poured water on the wounds to clean them. She wrapped her blanket around Dragon’s arm, but it continued to slowly bleed. As he lay down, Minli noticed Dragon’s eyes fade and blur. Chris Goa and Madma are paying their respect to Tuareg. This is their first offering for Shango Records.
