I was frozen in front of the TV all night for days -- watching the coverage of the revolution in Egypt. That event simmered in my subconscious for weeks and then one day this tune got stuck in my head. With the help of my ALT-230 friends this song will be released early in 2012 as a single, and later as an album track.

I wanted to capture the thinly restrained chaos and unstoppable energy of that moment; and boil it down to it's essence -- the essence of many similar events in the past and future.

Here is "Dragon" with all it's parts. What is left to do is comp the tracks, pull the final mix together and master the track. Although this hasn't been comped yet, the selected takes are pretty good (IMO).

Dragon is a pub song about death. It is written in a style that handles the fear and "taboo" surrounding difficult issues by addressing them with shocking directness.

There are some nifty mixing tricks in here too -- for example, each acoustic instrument has it's own stereo image already. In order to pan the mandolin hard left and guitar hard right without squashing the detail out of their respective stereo images, I pan only small amount and then use a tiny delay to simulate the position of the instrument using phasing. For example, pan the mandolin left 20% and add a 0.2ms delay to the right channel. 

Using this trick the full stereo image of each acoustic instrument can be preserved even while psycho-acoustically moving it hard right or left.


Dragon - RoughMixNoCompYet

This is the first of a collection of abstract dance music and other electronica that has been simmering in my brain for years... I've been too busy to put any of it down, but this one escaped into the DAW one afternoon before I could put it back in it's cage... now it calls to the others - encouraging them to escape as well.

Look for this tune on the "OTHERWORLD" album along with the others when they are finished :-)

Shiney and Deep, the surface of the sky, the lake of the soul at peace, sparkling in the starlight and reflecting a stream of consciousness that is unique to all beholders.

This is another one that will be on the upcoming "Otherworld" album.

Trippy track from my upcoming OTHERWORLD album. This started as a conversation that led to a joke that bubbled through my subconscious, picked up some poetry references, and spilled out into the DAW.

I have been making music semi-professionally since the mid 1980s. Along the way I have joined or formed a number of bands playing styles ranging from classic rock to jazz and appearing in venues as small as your local pub or as large as HammerJacks.
