Recorded very simply with a Sony ECM-717 stereo mic a few rows back in the audience, and a Philips DCC 170 portable digital recorder.

The Philips used (the exact equivalent of) MPEG-1 compression at 384kbps with an audio bandwidth limit of 15kHz. The tape was transferred using the DCC-730 deck which gives an 18 bit PCM output. This was captured in the DAW at 24 bit to maintain the 18 bit word length. The recording is processed with some eq and an increased stereo width using MS to compensate for the limitations of the microphone position listening again I would revise this). A touch of Izotope RX denoise was applied to reduce the organ pump noise.

A section of an old song with the chord progression, melody and lyrics removed so the backing band can be heard. Would work well as a TV theme I think!

The drummer in this band is amazing, so I thought I'd try to see what his work would sound like with a TR-909. Then I had to add two TB-303s. So I've ended up doing a Chicago house c.1986 version, with reverb :)
