"I started Noir in a way I rarely start a track - by designing the intro lead. I was trying to recreate a certain synth but accidentally switched the waveform from a sine to a saw which created this Bladerunner-esque synth! I wanted a dry trap-influenced drop to offset the wet and melodic intro and it was one of the tracks that almost wrote itself."

We're not even close to recovering from the sonic assault of Technique's twentieth-anniversary 'Remix LP' but the follow-up strike is already upon us. We've seen classics from the back cat get the treatment from the likes of A.M.C, Bladerunner, Marky and Digital, but now it's all about looking to the future. With ten brand new killer tunes, the Technique Recordings gang are already setting a benchmark for 2020.

And, judging by this album, the picture of what's to come is multi-hued and multi-faceted.

The break-focused future-jungle tear-out of Drumsound & Bassline Smith's 'Ruffneck Soldier' – already a tried and tested deejay weapon on dub – sits alongside the cinematic expanse of L Plus's 'The Planet' and the controlled aggression of NC-17 and Exile's 'War'.

As if to emphasise the variety, No Concept's Kerizma-laced 'Electrify' rubs shoulders with Tantrum Desire and Youngman's 'Precision', offering us a horror-influenced stomper and a soul-meets-staccato dancefloor workout respectively. And that's before we even get into the contribution from DJSS, 'Only Get Better', blending subtlety and savagery in equal measure.

This is Technique's 2020 vision, setting out a blueprint for the type of beat and bassline science that's going to be lighting up drum 'n' bass dancefloors over the coming months. Building on the hard-earned legacy of twenty years in the business, their next two decades in the top tier start right here. Essential.

hailing from Austria, Manta brings with him the dancefloor vibes which have made Mainframe parties and its imprint so notorious. Beginning the EP is title-track ‘Spectre’, a crunching, distorted record which takes you deep into the fray with every club-orientated groove. It raises the levels and throughout Manta’s forthcoming ‘Spectre’ EP this are upheld, signalling how Mainframe have stayed at the top for so long. They’ve always managed to pull through the very best talent from their local waters.

Manta’s ‘Timeshift’ follows the same algorithm, setting the pace with a flitting intro which drops you deep into its carnage. ‘Survival’ is next on the track list, pushing through alongside the jagged edges which make Manta’s records ooze with danceability. Then ‘Encounter’ draws the EP to a close, boasting the type of full-frontal assault that causes so many ravers to stream through the doors of Mainframe's settings night after night.

The valley was a lush place, with flora and fauna of all types contained between its mountainous peaks. This way it had been for ages untold, and those who lived there wanted for not in their idyllic existence. Untouched they were by the world, hidden away in a pocket of paradise unknown to all others. Indeed, theirs was a blessed existence, but such gifts were a treasure that could not go unnoticed by all. On that fateful day, a shadow had passed the sun, and it was in the duration of this mid-day’s night that from high upon the mountain a thunderous roar did erupt. On a cold frigid wind came a new beast to the valley, with scales that glittered white as fresh fallen snow. Reptilian as it seemed, upon vermillion wings did it soar, and from its breath came the fury of deep winter’s hoar. It withered the forests that those who lived there called home, and those caught in its wake were frozen to the bone. Not even stone could stand against the great being’s wrath, and reduced to foundations were all buildings in its path. From within these ruins it plundered an invaluable hoard, taking the treasure of the valley’s great lord. With one final roar the beast then took to the skies, returning to the mountain from whence it came on high. Down below lay the valley, its inhabitants frozen firm, in fear under the shadow of that great ICY WYRM.

MIZO returns to EATBRAIN to debut his latest EP, which follows in the destructive wake of his Dust Devil EP on the label as well as further recent releases on labels including Neuropunk Records & C4C Recordings. Filled to the brim with the producer’s characteristic ferocious tones, the EP features a set of four tracks surging with serpentine basslines and deviously distorted sonics as MIZO leads the latest onslaught of the EATBRAIN horde from atop the eponymous ICY WYRM.

It's time for some veteran business on Technique Recordings. We've already seen T-Phonic dropping bombs on the label with his almighty team-ups with Deadman (now operating under the name Al Storm), and, of course, Sense's name will be familiar to all real heads. Whether you know him from his long-standing Moondance residency, his huge collabs with the likes of Peshay and J Majik or his heavyweight solo back cat, it's clear he brings some serious pedigree to the table.

So, what's the story here?

The first track is called 'Junglist Murderer' and, seemingly, it does exactly what the title suggests. We're thrown headlong into a landscape of rave stabs, manipulated breaks and ragga vocals. But that's just the intro. With an OJ's ear for twisting up styles and patterns, T-Phonic and Sense build to a drop which presents a whole different angle.

The gut-rupturing two-step drums and insistently grinding bass, punctuated and accentuated by masterful break-deployment connect the foundational elements of junglism directly to today's DnB dancefloors.

Then, 'Vanished Without a Trace' displays a whole other facet to T-Phonic and Sense's style. Cinematic layers of warm and enveloping synth-work paint an epic sci-fi setting, supplemented by the eponymous dialogue sample. We're in a world of huge, rising, hopeful chords, but with an insidious note of darkness and danger just under the surface.

The pounding savagery of the drop punches a hole straight through whatever gentle and comforting warmth there might have been in the intro's harmonies. Now we're down to business with explosive drums and shuddering low-end, and paranoid rising tones keeping the tension at heart-troubling levels. T-Phonic and Sense aren't close to being done there, though. They've saved some of their most twisted modulations for the second drop, making this a versatile weapon for creative deejays.

There's a combination of styles here, as junglist influences meld with modern dancefloor DnB. T-Phonic and Sense have delivered two tunes that are going to find a place in sets across the drum 'n' bass scene and beyond. Unmissable.

Future Tech have returned. For those who don't know the history, this was the production outfit behind the very first release on Technique Recordings back in 1999, as well as the twentieth-anniversary remix that introduced the name to a whole new generation. But, even if the name's unfamiliar, the artists behind it certainly aren't. You know them as Drumsound & Bassline Smith.

So what does contemporary Future Tech music sound like?

Well, right from the unsettling glitches and darkside claustrophobia of the intro, 'Sabotage' is a raw and gritty proposition. That unrelenting buzzsaw bass tone slices through the atmosphere, a militant call-to-action for the dance.

Then, Future Tech drop us into a shadowy stepper, fluctuating waves and pulses of bass occupying the space left by the minimalist drums. Already, this is going to hit hard in raves everywhere, but there's more to come. Keep it running and you reach a masterful breakdown, drawing on a new palette of swirling atmospheric sounds, reconfiguring and rebuilding to dancefloor destruction.

In what, hopefully, is the first of many new Future Tech productions, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have delivered an expert-level deejay weapon. Minimal yet heavyweight, elegantly restrained but explosively powerful, this is yet another stylistic twist in the story of these legendary producers. Don't miss it.
