Magda and NYMA present their newest project called DTR, short for Define The Relationship. Its aim is to reshape, reintroduce and revive early influences and act as a homage to the past, present and future. All DTR releases are edits of famous tracks from the past, released directly to the fans without a label. This way Magda and NYMA want to focus on the music and inspire people, who are not yet familiar with the originals to check them out.

The first release is DTR001 Chaka Khan "I Feel For You", originally released in 1984.

Magda is an artist who can never be pinned down, no matter the timeframe or time signature. Any one of the Detroit-raised artist's DJ sets or productions breeds a rare feel of mystique and discovery. "I'm really obsessed with finding a line between things - between sounds and between genres. My influences come from a life spent in very different environments, which plays a huge role in the way I connect with music."

Dramatic sounds and eccentric basslines carry her multilayered sound, which veers everywhere from funked-out space disco to the intricately-programmed, metallic feel of Detroit to stripped down techno, all the way to Italian horror film soundtracks. The only thing that remains consistent is the element of surprise.

Her accidental entry into Detroit's underground party scene as a teenager was the kick-start she needed for a lifelong love affair. Soon all became a blur of "cities, record stores, and parties." In 1998, she joined Minus and began touring the world as Richie Hawtin's sole opener. From there, her distinctive sound began to develop and the rest is history.

Stylistically, Magda grooves through opposition - creating sets that are emotion-led yet clinical, having profound expertise with analog and digital technology. Her sound is otherworldly but visceral; dark with a warm sense of beauty and grace; sparse yet wondrously full-bodied with density and bass-swathed extremes. Magda's DJing style has been encapsulated on her mixed CDs 'She's A Dancing Machine,' and her mix for London club Fabric 'Fabric 49' (a mix CD with as much artistry and vision as an original album).

In the fall of 2010, Magda revealed her debut, 'From The Fallen Page,' a darkly- tinged, transportive album that curiously combines natural, organic sounds, and modern electronic grace. Similar to her unpredictable DJ sets, 'From The Fallen Page' took listeners from one end of the spectrum to the other, treading the fine lines of extremities along the way.

These days Magda isn't home very often. In-between touring, she's fully focused on her recently resurrected label 'Items & Things.' The label's vision always pinpoints the off-kilter and the uncommon, seeking out new artists and sounds that push boundaries. "Items and things are bits and pieces of uniqueness we come across. The label is a platform to launch the music that we love. There are no rules, just sounds we like and artists we believe in."

Over the past ten years, few techno labels have drawn as much attention as M-nus, the Berlin-based crew of expatriates led by DJ and producer Richie Hawtin. Among the label's most well-known members are Magda and Marc Houle. From their teenage years playing parties in Detroit, to their stadium-sized gigs during 2008’s Contakt tour, these two artists helped define the lean and punchy sound that came to be known as minimal. Both are currently on the road together promoting new albums. Houle's Drift features lengthy guitar-centric techno experiments, while Magda's From the Fallen Page translates her fascination with horror soundtracks into the same framework. The day before they shipped out this fall, RA's Will Lynch talked the duo about video games, Communist Poland and why it's sometimes uncool to be Magda and Marc Houle.

One of your top 10 DJs of 2009 pops in for a rare insight into her varied influences.

Magda is among the last of what seems like a dying breed, a DJ that has made a career based solely around their talents behind the decks. The Minus mainstay has put her name to a production or two, but the reason that she has been among your favourite DJs of the past few years has nothing to do with anything except what she puts forth in a live setting. Her 2006 mix CD, She's a Dancing Machine has come to represent a defining moment in Minus' rise to prominence, and her blend-happy mix for fabric last year once again showcased the possibilities of the form.

For her entry into RA's podcast series, Magda doesn't get quite as deep into the mix, instead opting for a more accurate representation of what you might hear from her at a private afterparty: Stone-cold bangers of recent and classic vintage. Letting things breathe, she puts together tracks from Black Devil Disco Club, Lindstrom, Chris and Cosey and ESG into something she simply calls "a fun summer mix." We wholeheartedly agree.

What have you been working on recently?

I have been working on an album and several remixes.

Your debut album has been in the works for quite a while now. How is it going?

Yes, it's finally finished and the release date will be announced in the next few weeks. I had so much recorded material from the last three years, and it all finally came together in the way I wanted so I'm happy.

How and where was the mix recorded?

I recorded the mix using Ableton while I was traveling and in my studio in Berlin. I had to clean up a lot of the old tracks and try to make them sound better in the mix. That was the hard part.

Can you tell us a little about this idea behind the mix?

I just wanted to make a fun summer mix, and something much different than I have done in the past. I used a lot of my favorite old post-punk/disco/electro tracks, many of which I would not be able to license for a DJ mix. It was really, really fun to put together.

As a performer, which style of DJing do you enjoy the most? More of a loop-based approach, or using your timecoded vinyl?

I do many edits, but in general I don't like to play loops. I like when tracks build and change. I prefer to only mix two things at a time. At the moment I still use timecode vinyl, but I am working on a new set-up for the fall. 

You're known for your punishing tour schedule. Do you have any particular favorite spots to DJ, and why?

Haha, am I known for that? Punishing indeed, but it's fun! There are so many lovely places to play, and I'm happy to be able to play there. I have to say my nights in Germany at Robert Johnson and Loft Club have become my favorites. The atmosphere is small, dark and hot, and the crowd is with you the whole night. It's really fun to do long sets there. 

What are you up to next?

I'm going to start working on a live show for next year. In the meantime, I'm going to do some remixes and a DJ mix for BBC radio in the UK.

CHLOE - ONE IN ANOTHER RMXS Chloe's music, especially on her second album One in Other, is a diamond in the rough for remixers. It belongs to the murky waters on the edge of dance music, flirts with experimentation and gives the lucky ones a wide array of eerie material to work with. But her music is also extremely intimate and personal, hence it would be blasphemy to give away such emotions to 'house by the mile' manufacturers. You can always make cheap bling out of raw gold, many do. At Kill the DJ, we tried to choose artists able to make fine and striking jewellery. Magda is a long time friend of Chloe's and Kill the DJ and this is a surprisingly welcome late addition to the stable. Like Chloe, she is comfortable on the edge, not afraid of the void. With the help of a strangely catchy broken piano, her rickety version of Distant throws sand in the well-oiled mechanics of minimalism.

Magda teams up with Suade, a producer &amp; friend from Newcastle that we're sure to see more of, together they bring forth a true builder, a creeper; the type of track that reveals itself more with each layering sequence. A masterclass in dynamics, ‘Fixation’ is a dark groove that’s haunted by a chilling vocal, wavering synth vibrato, unexpected melodies, and juxtaposes of funk. Angular drums hit alongside swells of percussive echoes but, the focus of the track revolves around the bassline’s movement. As catchy as it is esoteric.

Top-notch DJs and producers are often known for their globe-trotting ways, but Magda takes it to another level. Born in Poland, she came of age in Detroit and was eventually adopted by Richie Hawtin and the rest of the Minus Records crew. Now living in Berlin, she's been in the news as of late after the (somewhat surprising) announcement that she was leaving Minus after more than a decade and instead focusing on Items & Things, a label she runs with Marc Houle and Troy Pierce. Although the split was amicable, it does represent the start of an important new chapter in the techno veteran's career, so we figured that now would be a good time for her to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. True to form, Magda has delivered a deep, complex mix that often features three our four tracks playing at once while she combines techno—of both the pulsing Detroit and minimal variety—with bits of house, disco, and a few other surprises. Magda's future may be wide open, but there is little doubt that her DJ abilities are still on-point.

Equal parts perspiration and inspiration, SHE’S A DANCING MACHINE delivers with micro-edits, custom loops and lofty effects, born out of her DJ ascension from beating the bits out of her Final Scratch in clubs. The mix has the range you’d expect with top shelf artists included such as Metro Area, Ricardo Villalobos, Marc Houle and Robert Babicz and sets up some surprises from decades past by dropping in Larry Heard and Portion Control. Amongst personal favorites from The Persuader (Svek’s Jesper Dahlbäck) she’s not afraid to loop in her own productions from Minus and her new label (along with Marc Houle and Troy Pierce), Items & Things.

Magda is amongst the most high-profile and in demand artists, having proven herself as a consistent, adventurous and exceptional performer, with a knack for bringing music together in unexpected ways.
Magda's realm as an artist pans far beyond the typical role of DJ and producer. With an open mind, Magda will try her hand at whatever feels right – from music technology collaborations and events to producing premium Tequila - creating a truly unique, multifaceted expression of herself.
Born in Poland and raised in Detroit, Magda discovered beauty and inspiration in Detroit’s raw urban landscape. In 1998, she joined the Minus label and began touring as Richie Hawtin's main DJ.
Since her first international tour in 2003, Magda established herself globally as an artist known for pushing musical boundaries and expressing her unique style. She released her forward-thinking DJ mix album 'She's A Dancing Machine' in 2006, followed by her debut artist album ‘From The Fallen Page’ in 2010 among other single releases. Magda’s remix work includes Plastikman and Depeche Mode and DJ mix albums for Fabric, Balance, as well as a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, among others.
In 2006, Magda established the Items & Things label and booking agency with Troy Pierce and Marc Houle.
In 2017, she launched the Perm event series in Berlin. Sitting pretty at the crossroads between art and club culture, Perm was a collective initiated by Magda and established in the name of artistic cross-pollination with a very strong multimedia aesthetic. Guests included Atom TM, Burnt Friedman, Jan Jelinek, and Cristian Vogel.
Recently, Magda has produced and performed alongside T.B. Arthur as Blotter Trax. The Blotter Trax live show combines modular synthesis, live improvisation and rhythmic exploration. Performance highlights have included live audio- visual duets with video artist Lillevan (Morton Subotnick, Christian Fennesz) and a recent club tour of Japan which saw the duo performing live and transitioning into Magda’s signature DJ sets.
