Delayed piano stabs tease us in with encircling robotic, tropical soundscapes before a playful electro beat pounds in our eardrums. Layered percussion and woozing pads leave us longing to know where the track will take us before a wave of 80s stranger synths envelop the song, zapping us straight to a dimension of yesteryear's future.

The full 3-track EP by Jauge titled ‘MBE005’ is scheduled to be released on the 25th of March 2021 by the Vietnam based record label; Magic Box Engine.

FKYH

PREMIERE: Jauge - FKYH [Magic Box Engine]

Surrealism - Noun.  "A 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind."

Formed as an artistic movement in the early 1900s, its exciting journey took it from being an anti-art movement to a leftist ideology before eventually erupting into civil war in the mid-20s. 

Artists Yvon Goll and Andre Breton published conflicting manifestos, with the latter arguing reality doesn't exist and the former profoundly disagreeing. This schism flared to the point of an open brawl in a comedy club on the Champs-Elyse, in which it's not clear who won. 

Breton's superior tactics and political maneuvering won him control of the Surrealist movement in the end and led to it becoming a tool for expressing surreal existence in a non-existent world.

It's not clear who Teodora Van Context would back in a fight between Goll and Breton but her mix certainly enters the surreal. Dreamy pads, idiosyncratic percussion, and left-field grooves give enough energy to keep us intrigued but leave enough space for us all to get lost and ponder our bizarre (lack of?) existence.

It was an iconic year where House jetted across the pond, arriving in Europe and being changed forever. What was a niche underground genre in America would become the defining sound of the following decade for most of the Old World. MBE #33: Shinpei - Miso, Benishoga & Sake

Folklore is the expressive body of culture shared by a particular group of people; it encompasses the traditions common to that culture, subculture or group. This includes oral traditions such as tales, proverbs and jokes. They include material culture, ranging from traditional building styles to handmade toys common to the group. Folklore also includes customary lore, taking actions for folk beliefs, the forms and rituals of celebrations such as Christmas and weddings, folk dances and initiation rites. Each one of these, either singly or in combination, is considered a folklore artifact. Just as essential as the form, folklore also encompasses the transmission of these artifacts from one region to another or from one generation to the next.

In comes Catalin Stefan Paunescu with his own folklore MBE transmission. A Romanian DJ based in Da Nang, Vietnam, who's made a name for himself as DJ Bipolar Bear and promoter for Badaboom events. The mix starts with a deep tune sampling Romanian folklore and keeps the approach touching on Brazil, Vietnam, Japan, India, Middle East and West Africa. This is Acid Folkloric.

For our 38th MBE transmission we welcome Soft-Touch Operation aka Ivan Turanjanin all the way from South Africa. Drawing inspiration from the complexities of classical symphonies right through to the raw industrial essence of electronic music, Ivan seeks out sounds and compositions that realign spaces and audiences with an eye toward the future. Magic. 

From curating small clubs to running large scale festivals, Ivan aims to re-enforce the rich traditions of electronic music history whilst lending the same passion to the advancement of underground music culture in South Africa and beyond with his various formidable event and music projects, namely @Ivan, @soft-touch-operation, @killer-robot, @dj-low-1 and @ctemf-1.

Rising from the South African underground, Thor Rixon has found his home in Berlin’s electronic music community, spreading his unique sound of forward-focused dance music across Europe, with releases on respected House & Techno labels such as Get Physical, Activia Benz, Laut & Luise, and his own labels Vibe Killer & Eko Worldwide.

When he takes the stage, expect energy. He launches a dance floor with an array of analog drum machines, synthesizers, and samplers. This live show and Rixon’s production style has made him a growing force in the global dance music landscape.

Ronoc [the red] aka Conor White is a 22-year-old producer and DJ hailing from Cape Town, South Africa, who explores many sounds in his eclectic productions, with a common theme of stomach-churning basslines, bouncy breaks, and nostalgic pads. Growing up in Cape Town's melting pot of sounds, he was immersed in the city's vibrant underground scene, where diverse genres and cultures intersect, deeply shaping his approach to music.

Sailing through the vast labyrinth of the underworld and past the glacial rocks,  his victory over the Sirens was a distant memory. A story to tell around campfires when he was to return home. After some hours, a luminous green guided Orpheus into the terrifying chasm for which he sought. He was met by Hades's machiavellian smile who knew he would come for his wife but had no intention of giving her up.

Suddenly, Orpheus brandished his golden lyre and enraptured Hades with a melody so beautiful it could end wars. Orpheus's wife would be returned to him but on one condition: He may not lay eyes on her until they leave the underworld. Being the great traveler that Orpheus was, he accepted these conditions without hesitation and set off with his wife by his side.

Hours turned to days, and he could not find the glacial rocks that marked his way, and Hades's wicked laugh sounded in the deep. Days would turn into weeks, and weeks months, and soon it became clear that he would spend the rest of eternity wandering the underworld with his wife so close, yet so far.

Mike Wallis is a South African creative with house music as his round the clock soundtrack. As a music journalist he has a keen ear for unearthing hidden stories and regularly contributes to platforms like Red Bull Music, as well as running his own locally focused platform www.deepstreet.co.za. His selections as a DJ lean towards deep and soulful, a sound he grew up with in his hometown of Pretoria, but further encompass sounds of ambient, afro, dub, melodic, indie dance and anywhere in between.

This mix is a movement from some of the deeper sides of Mike Wallis's taste, to the more indie dance, disco orientated styles his palette is growing into. A mixture of South African and European tastes & flavours.

Mishouju is a young DJ from Belarus who is currently based in Hanoi. He's the co-founder of intercultural creative association/record label “Homebp" based in Warsaw and a part of the "Buddha Electronics" project. He recently joined us at the MBE headquarters and recorded this edgy 1 hour mix full of high energy electro, techno and acid. Turn up the volume, press play and enjoy.

MBE #10: Mishouju - Paliacel Hlopchik

The Dodge Tomahawk - History's fastest motorbike is proposed to be capable of speeds of up to 680km/h, boasts 500 horsepower, and a whopping 10-cylinder engine. For context, commercial airplanes generally take off at 240-285km/h - so the Tomahawk is one pretty quick bike. The fastest route from sunrise to sunset on the planet.

A Honda Wave's okay though, I guess. Anyway, here's a set of straight bumpers by Amsterdam-based Manila Spice, and the closest you're going to get to ever riding a Dodge Tomahawk.

MBE Transmission

MBE #21: Manila Spice - Micro Sunrise

The driver's seat of her pimped-out Cadillac was always where she felt most comfortable, having never been made to walk or interact with others.  The pressures of the week boiled and crescendoed every Friday, followed by Saturday errands, with only the thought of Sundays keeping her going. 

She'd wake up early every week, eat whatever food she had left in her fridge, grab her sunglasses and get the hell out of there.

Palm trees; skyscrapers; lakes; kids shooting hoops; roller-skaters; chefs taking their cigarette breaks; arguments in the street; a man enjoying his lunch-time sandwich a little too much; sunsets; dusk.

Life's always better from behind the wheel.

Dane jumps back into the mix with an off-the-cuff bedroom groove that's sure to pick up anybody's Sundays or Whateverdays. Take a ride in the MBE Cadillac.

MBE #24: Dane - Sunday Ride

Jaguars, macaws, and kinkajous move in tandem, ushering you into their jungle abode, their stalking, shuffling, and jumping, swayful and giddying at every turn. Taking a step back you notice something different up top.

These might not seem the most exciting creatures at first but sloth's slow movement and dreary eyes tell a different story if you watch them long enough. While the more alluring animals of the woods dizzy their guests with erratic movement, our unhurried friends dance ever so slightly, hypnotizing, bewitching, and enchanting all that watch. 

You didn't trek all this way to watch this strange, graceless animal get down like this, and yet here you are. Your mouth ajar, eyes wide open, and heart-pounding in time.

Manikk and Dane return once more for the 3rd episode of their 'Tell' series. Press play and enjoy their slow signature sounds when they join forces.

DANE @ Studio Adventure: Phu Quoc Odyssey - NYE Sunrise (live Set)

Androids are known for numbers and services; little else.  # 3456 has always been told they will never amount to anything different. Creativity isn't in their nature - how could they be anything other than a service droid?

When their far larger and superior neighbors from the Nebula System finally invaded, what use would the droids be in battle? However, # 3456 thought differently and thought this was their time to shine. They wanted to show droids, cyborgs, robots, and the galaxy's underclass, that they can move too.

When the undisputed mercenary champion popped their fabled lock-it, and the crowd erupted, # 3456 knew it was now or never. Droids might look like they're capable of only one thing, but this couldn't be further from the truth.

As the mercenary champion gestured aggressively at # 3456, they knew it was time to show this crowd what the dismissed can do.

Sen10za doesn't disappoint with this MBE transmission debut. A trippy and tasteful selection of spacey sounds. This is Neptune Rotisserie.

Slowly Episode 09: @levioi

We're guided to all corners of the globe with this stellar episode from Levi Oi. The shimmering, emerald hilltops of Colombia burst to life with her enthralling intro before she takes us to the Near-East with its hypnotic array of strings, before finishing with a pulsating finish of percussive elements from South Asia.

She's known for her ability to veer seamlessly through styles with a refreshing sense of curiosity and this episode is another fantastic example of that.

Levi Oi was born and raised in Germany, but has lived in Melbourne, Dubai, London, and recently Berlin before returning to Saigon at the end of 2018 to discover her roots and become a DJ.

In October 2019, she played her first Boiler Room set in Saigon before organizing music events and acting as tour manager for Red Axes's EP “Trips in Vietnam”.
