Politico dub-collage practitioners Guerilla Welfare came from Edmonton, Alberta, coincidentally the birthplace of prophetic media sage Marshall McLuhan. Armed with vanguard ideas taken from Steve Reich, Fela Kuti, Robert Fripp and Material, the duo of Curtis Ruptash and Brian Schultze adopted the “studio as instrument” mindset of Eno and King Tubby creating complex textural and polyrhythmic sonic insurgencies. They overdubbed drum computers, guitar, bass, noise-makers, mallet percussion, sitars, often accompanied by sampled vocals and found sound taken from TV. Their pan-global, multi-media palette supported zeitgeist commentary — often, with a healthy dose of gallows humour — on gender, power structures, and sexual and geopolitical tensions in the late 80s. Their DIY bunker studio experimentations align them with genre defying dub-infused outfits like African Head Charge, Dome, Lifetones, Naffi, Woo, Negativland and The Residents. The Nature of Human Nature captures Guerilla Welfare’s most formidable output, compiling tracks selected from their entire discography (two LPs and a cassette collaboration with poet Mary Howes), all originally self-released from 1986 to 1991. Remastered from the original tapes.

In 1916, in the middle of the First World War, a small town in Ontario changed its name from Berlin to Kitchener. Many mercurial decades later, in 1988, the town now a mid-sized city, a duo called Vernal Equinox released a record that seemed to trace its roots back to Berlin, but this time the shadowy post-war Berlin of the 70s that produced Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and his Innovative Communications family, and Bowie and Eno’s Berlin Trilogy. These inspirations, viewed through a prism of 80s New Age and the autumnal denim-clad rural Ontario, became New Found World. 

New Found World is the inaugural release on Aural Medium, Toronto-based non-musician Linus Booth’s new label focussing on revisionist electronic, industrial and no wave music. Remastered from the reels and pressed on double 45rpm vinyl with an unreleased track from the original sessions.

Limited edition of 500 copies. 100 on bone white vinyl, 400 on black vinyl.

In 2015, JD Twitch's Autonomous Africa label released Youth Stand Up!, a triangular recording project hatched at Glasgow’s Green Door Studio that brought together young musicians from Belize, Ghana and Glasgow for ten tracks of cross-cultural collaboration. The result was an infectious cocktail of traditional Caribbean and West African rhythms, hip hop, highlife and Glaswegian post-punk, featuring contributions from Optimo Music regulars Golden Teacher and Whilst, among others.

The proceeds from that project went directly back to the youth groups in Ghana and Belize, helping the musicians from Ghana’s Tafi Cultural Institute build a recording studio and performance space in their village.

Two years later, a grant from Creative Scotland’s Open Fund spawned the sequel to Youth Stand Up!: Youth Stand United, recorded both at Green Door and at TCI’s new studio in Ghana (with Golden Teacher’s Laurie Pitt at the controls), and mixed by Green Door’s Stuart and Emily Evans.

Youth Stand United features backing tracks contributed by members of Golden Teacher, Pu$$y Mothers, Whilst, Kaputt, and Sordid Sound System, with vocals provided by the musicians from TCI. Over 6 songs, it oscillates from the left-field disco of Diloeshutubui to the Juju-electro odyssey of Gidi to the Joe-Meek-meets-William Onyeabor space age gospel pop of Nobody Knows.

Proceeds from Youth Stand United will go towards a scholarship fund for musicians from Tafi Atome, Ghana.

Following his work as part of //TENSE// and a previous release on S U R V I V E’s Holodeck label, Jake crafts seven tracks that blur the lines between komische, new age and wave, realised with his arsenal of vintage synthesisers and drum machines.

In anticipation of Kit Sebastian's forthcoming second album in 2021, the duo have delved into their archives to present a special digital single release. Think of this as not necessarily a taster of what's to come, but more as a starter that refreshes the appetite for the next course.

'Rain (باران)' was the second track recorded in their analogue studio, and because of this, it has a slightly more primitive rudimentary sound. It was written more or less to test the studio and to learn what sounded good and didn't. It was a hot French hazy July day which you can hear translated into the sound of the track. The version on this EP has been re-sung to include Merve’s vocals.

'Questions' was written and recorded for the duo's short film 'C'est Quoi Le Mantra Moderne'. It was intended for a scene that they would later abandon: a summer night, sitting in an old-fashioned café in Le Grand-Pressigny, where they ask each other one question after another without any clear answers. Given the limited amount of film they had, this idea felt risky which meant they couldn't release the track with the film. Yet, it can still be enjoyed on its own and hopefully, still, enrich the experience of their visual essay and bring a new layer to it.

We hope you enjoy this further excursion into the world of Kit Sebastian, and big thanks to the duo for rescuing 'Questions' from the cutting room floor for us all to savour.
