London based duo ddwy lay it down for podcast number 035 ahead of their Love International debut in Tisno this July.

French Born Ouissam Mokretar was always drawn to Asia, making a home in Hong Kong before finally settling in Hanoi back in 2016. The logic was to find a space that allowed for him to create without the stressors of highly saturated music hubs and their exorbitant rents. His Midas touch transformed a corner of Hong Kong first, moving the goal posts of accepted nightlife culture from the get-go with his founding of record imprints Cliché, and the beloved Homesick and Fragrant Harbour, pushing a custom blend of disco, house and techno that’s made ripples across the city since. He cultivated the fertile soil of Vietnam’s capital next, with new venue Savage (its second iteration taking over the premises of the ex-Angolan embassy), constituent vinyl pit-stop Pond Records and its monthly queer night Snug, as well as local music festival Equation. Single handedly fostering a young community of music lovers is an impressive achievement, and Ouissam makes it look both easy and fun. His sound meanders through poppier house, synth to boogie, Italo to Cantopop. Korean disco, Japanese funk and the sounds of the Phrygian Scale borrowed from a little farther west - an ongoing love letter to his chosen continent. Bassiani Podcast 216 is a colourful blend of feel-good tunes cut from his set at Horoom back in March. Expansive and libertine, his hedonistic sound is a pure joy to dance to, a magnetic energy that’s surely played no small part in building his world as he has.

About the mix: When moving countries this year, I had a bit of an annual crisis about how to balance developing my sound while staying true to my musical identity. During the year, I took a lot of time to dig a bit deeper while staying in the realm of progressive house, landing for the most part in the early 2000s. This mix showcases some of my favourite tracks I found while doing so, now more confident than ever in the music I play. When putting this mix together, it was all about including hidden gems, dancefloor weapons and bold basslines to close out 2024 in a strong way, all the while taking a similar approach to curating a club closing or peak time set.

Max Tournay aka https://soundcloud.com/kafim is an established name in the Brussels underground community. He started deejaying techno music as a resident of the infamous Deep In House collective, who later founded C12 club where he was also a resident for several years. 

Max and I used to play regularly together around 2014/2015 as a deep techno dj duo and shared a couple of nice moments behind the booth. Yet, our paths went separate ways. Max’s interest floated away from club music, pulled towards a more wave-y, slowmo, rock-oriented spectrum. He has been a long-time host on Lyl radio, presenting a show called Basses Besognes focussing on psychedelic rock, garage, shoegaze & other guitar sounds. He also co-runs the (party) collective Curly Teeth, a platform for slowed-down forms of left-field club music.

Flash forward to a couple of months ago. Kafim played a long afternoon set at Horst Club’s intimate “Garage” room during the Gayhaze & Cocktail D’amore 2-day take over. On the dance floor, I was completely blown away by the uniqueness of Kafim’s music selection and super-skilled mixing. The energy that day was very special and emotional for me and the question of asking Max to share his mix after that day/night spent together was very logical. Here is the result of an artist rediscovering himself constantly but always counting on the technical skills of his early techno days. 

Another fact: Max came up with the name Basic Moves when Ailsa and I started the project 8 years ago. I’m so happy that our paths have crossed again, and I can give a platform to this live recording.
