Writing about techno is quite difficult without falling into clichés: there are only so many ways that you can say something about a music whose core elements are forged on deliberate repetition; where real talent is attributed to those who can find the perfect groove where nothing needs added or subtracted to hold the listener's attention for upwards of five minutes. 

Such tracks are the hallmark of Tresor's catalogue, and this joy in repetition can be found in works from Detroit, Berlin, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and more. And it is through this lens that Parisian artist, UFO95, focuses his output, resulting in Backward Improvement, an EP that sits perfectly in the spectrum of techno found in the Tresor chronology. 

The title itself makes an abstract reference to the influence of the classics of the genre, inspiring him to take a distinct less-is-more approach to production for this collection of stripped-down yet unrelenting techno chiselled from the live set which has fixed UFO95 as one of the next holdfasts for the future of the scene. 

Perhaps it is the fact the UFO95 only performs live that had led to such crisp and focussed studio productions.; each of the tracks showcase the artist's burgeoning talent for creating the essential foundations of techno; perfect, looping, instinctual grooves that are counterbalanced by an apprehensive tension from off-key tones. 

Backward Improvement marks the addition of a new name in the list of techno's best producers and proves that while the genre may now be in its 40th year there are yet sonic explorations to be made and variations that are worth unearthing.

Kicking the label off with an electrifying five-track debut EP titled ‘Sacrifices For Success’, it's brimming with a blend of contemporary Techno and time-honoured genre influence. 'Are You Paranoid' launches the A-side with a modern twist, featuring a gripping acid bassline and explicit peak-time intensity. 'Nostalgic Pain' delves into a captivating blend of hard-hitting techno vibes and iconic sonics, reminiscent of acid and rave renaissance.

The title track, 'Sacrifices For Success,' combines old-school Techno core with pulsating low-end, climactic sci-fi synths, and hypnotic vocals, telling a euphoric story. 'Method In The Madness' progresses with celestial harmonies and industrial grooves, delivering a pedal-to-the-medal experience. Closing with 'Escape With Me,' a 90s-inspired dance track, Frazi.er shares stories from his career, blending past and present influences.

“I wanted to end the release with a more timeless track” adds Frazi.er. “They all tell a story about something that I have gone through during my career so far, and this track has a little past and present in it. 90’s inspiration but implemented in a modern way”.

BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix [October 2017]

It's day 3 of our Magnetic Mix 100th episode celebration, and representing the home team we have our very own editor Kane stepping up to the plate. Beyond reviews, presenting, and his podcast In Conversation, Kane is a producer, DJ, label head, and budding voice in the industry. Earlier this year he had the first release on Grum's new label Deep State, as well as performed his first live set via Twitch. Seeing as we are celebrating 100 episodes, it only felt right for him to contribute. 

Here's what he had to say about the mix: "Even though things seem to be winding down a bit with lockdown, we're not out of the woods yet. For this mix, I wanted to bring positive energy and groove. I dug out some classics, some unreleased bits, and even some '90s, techno. I also wanted to end somewhere totally different than where the mix begins, to keep you on your toes."
