Magnetude’s debut single ‘Mantis’ marked the beginning of a new chapter with the launch of Evolution Chamber. The label was set up by Task Horizon, Magnetude & Receptor to provide a creative outlet for like minded artists and since its inception in 2019 the label has grown from strength to strength. Evolution Chamber’s reputation for being independent and not sticking to any formative rules has gained a lot of attraction from artists across the full spectrum of Drum & Bass, with the labels next release being the trigger for a flurry of remixes and singles lined up in 2022 from both Magnetude & Evolution Chamber.

The eagerly anticipated and sought after single ‘Valhalla’ constitutes every inch of what Magnetude aims to represent within their compositions. And that’s not to just deliver music for the dancefloor, but it’s their cinematic and storytelling concepts blended with their intricate detail and technical production skills which when combined, creates their own unique vision that captivates and immerses the listener and takes you on a journey of endless imagination.

Their viking tale kicks off with flaring pad arrangements, marching drum lines and harmonised vocal riffs, giving the introduction a regal feel and the initial setting of the story that’s about to be told. As the intro moves into the buildup, the crushing kick-drum hits build up and drop into a sensory assault of distorted bass and unrelenting drums and percussion. The emotive signature vocal sings over the sonic palette of basses underneath that mutate and switch at will.

'Valhalla' represents a pivotal moment for both Magnetude & Evolution Chamber, and signifies the start of both the artist and labels onslaught of releases scheduled throughout the year, with both names certain to be echoed far and wide across the full Drum & Bass spectrum in 2022.

After months spent amidst the depths of the wilds since their passage beneath a great relic of The Dark Age, Scruggs and Sonny Jim stood once more before an object of inscrutable origin, a monolith engraved with the runic language of a long-lost culture. Puzzled, and with a bare amount of literacy available between them, their wizened trigger fingers traced the engraved markings upon the stone as the pair engaged in a once-in-a-lifetime attempt at scholarship.

“I ain't got one lick of an idea ‘bout what we’re looking at”

“Yup” was Scruggs’ sole reply as his finger drew towards the end of a particular sentence inscribed upon the monolith’s surface, though he knew it not as such. Then, with a sound the pair would later describe to their fellows around the campfire as “a flash flood and a twig snapping at the same time”, the pair vanished from the space before the monolith.

When they reappeared, the vision before their eyes was unlike any they had ever encountered before. The pair were astounded to find that they seemed to stand upon the very clouds amidst an endless void of darkness inlaid with millions of tiny points of light. Before this minuscule moment of comprehension had ended, the pair were once more bemused by the fact that they seemed to have fallen back to Earth in an instant, landing in an altogether different world than they had ever known. Lying amidst a labyrinth of pyramids graded by steep stone steps, the pair’s vision was overtaken by a brilliant flash of light that preceded the emergence of a plantoid being wrapped in vine, stem, and leaf woven together in mimicry of the human form. Though possessing only the semblance of a mouth, the voice of the SUPREME ENTITY echoed like thunder off of the hard surfaces of the pyramids that surrounded them, imparting a terrifying warning through their ears and directly into the core of their minds.

“Lower beings, the BURR OAK will take over this world. There are no limits. You will be mine, forever."

BURR OAK return to EATBRAIN with their latest single, SUPREME ENTITY, which comes as the first sample of the duo’s forthcoming debut album. The result of their long journey through the wildest of sonic realms, SUPREME ENTITY, and the album for which it stands as the harbinger are set to transform the sonic world of the EATBRAIN horde in the coming months as BURR OAK reveal the path to their sonic home.

What had once been but a small village had changed, coating itself in the metallic materials of a new age born of the prosperity that was wrought by its forebears, those who had bound demons in stone so many years ago. The elements of fire and brimstone with which such creatures once threatened the village now lay bound themselves, claimed and wielded as tools that had wrought the stairsteps of progress from the ruins of the city’s troubled past. As progress had waxed however, time waned, and few left still remembered the obelisk which lay hidden at the heart of their city, encased within a monument to victory over the realms’ more worldly foes. Within however, those foes of old had slumbered, keeping sharp the memories of their magical imprisonment. Outside, time had passed, and now arrived back to where it had once been. Thus with the waking of the demons is stone, the time of DIVERGENCE did once again begin.

It began subtly, as the influence of the demons seeped out from the ancient obelisk, transforming the visages of the metallic heroes who were their former jailors into subtly more monstrous forms. From the obelisks dark and rotted core seeped a sinister demonic poison, and ichor that worked its way into dark places both familiar and new. With it came the demons, who slithered out of their forgotten prison and found refuge amidst the smoke and flame now welcomed by those who had forbade them long before. As their power and number grew, their essence enveloped the city, immersing it in a sea of acrid darkness that choked living beings and the light of the sun with equal tenacity. Caught within this abyssal miasma, the minds of the city’s inhabitants corroded as their bodies mutated into horrendous forms, a slow, grueling process that spared those affected not a single horror. As day and night ceased to pass within the haze that strangled the city, the demons emerged from their dark places, assuming their de facto rulership over the city which was now carved in their image. Thus it was again that the world of the living was changed, therein by the darkness from which DIVERGENCE came.

EATBRAIN continues their DIVERGENCE compilation series with DIVERGENCE III, bringing together a monstrous roster including a surprise last ever appearance by the legendary FOREIGN BEGGARS produced by KILLBREAK, and label veterans TELEKINESIS, AGRESSOR BUNX, MIZO, THE CLAMPS, DISPHONIA, IHR, L 33, NAIS, COD3X, LIVEON, KUTLO and novel additions DISASZT, SHADOW SECT, SCREAMARTS, CHASER. What is a story without a plot? A journey without a destination? A movie without a soundtrack? A song without emotion?

These are the questions that carve Rustam Mansurov and James Peacock’s unique dynamic signature as Magnetude, an act with one of the most distinctive, exciting and dramatic sounds in contemporary drum & bass.

On a much deeper level, these questions are what magnetised the Anglo/Russian duo together in the first place. Born thousands of miles apart - and seemingly kept apart through an array of life complications - they remain kindred spirits connected through a series of shared passions, visions and creative ideologies.

Both sharing rich histories in music – Rustam was playing piano aged 9, James was playing violin aged 12 – they’re both heavily inspired by the importance of detail, orchestral dynamics and story-telling in music. Moved by the works of composers ranging from Ennio Morricone and Danny Elfman to Amon Tobin, John Williams to Ilya Beshevli, no amount of distance can quench the duo’s synergy and energy.

It’s a synergy that began in 2010 when they met on VKontake, and developed when Rustam was signed to Close 2 Death, a label James was A&R for at the time. In 2015 it evolved into a much stronger energy when the pair left Close 2 Death and started to collaborate on their own music. By 2016 the ‘Hyperdrive’ EP was born and Magnetude was ready to reveal to the world. It was delivered by one of most influential, innovative stables in the heavier D&B pastures at the time – Lifted Music.

Quickly appearing on some of the most prominent imprints in drum & bass culture such as Eatbrain, Renegade Hardware, Viper and RAM Records, their music has gone on to appear on games such as Project Cars and Freaked Fleapit, and between them they’ve torn dancefloors apart from Creamfields to Let It Roll, Pirate Station to XOYO. Most recently, they’ve co-founded the exciting forward-thinking, community-minded collective @EvolutionChamberOfficial alongside like-minded fusionists @TaskHorizonAudio and @ReceptorMusic.

Reminding the scene of the importance of strength in numbers and how the best things happen when people come together, Magnetude’s creative signature grows stronger. The plot thickens, the journey continues…
