Tidal Lock

This is perhaps my only dance number in a way, it follows the structure of modern dance pop with verse - instrumental - verse - instrumental. But this is not at all some mindless song to pound your fist to, Jupiter is a ballet in the middle of the night with the planets and the stars, a sense of freedom one can only experience in a mild breeze on the top of hill, drunk.

With a background as a pianist and musicology student, Gothenburg's Magnus Reimer embarked on a five year mission creating the epic electronic indie album Tidal Lock; a 14-track journey into the darker sides of popular music. Combining influences from the classical dark pop of David Bowie and Depeche Mode with electro and indie sounds from Sigur Rós, Efterklang and Sufjan Stevens, the aim was to create a lush and live orchestral sound using keyboard instruments and computers.

I'll Rise With No Other is the opening track on the album. With its experimental soundscapes, including metal percussion, amplified keyboards and complex harmonics, this is an interpretation of being caught in a spiderweb and the violent yet hopeless struggle to escape one's destiny. Although strikingly original, the inspirations from Sigur Rós, Sufjan Stevens and Depeche Mode make a clear presence, although Magnus Reimer himself would say it is no more than a pale 21th century version of Tchaikowsky's "Pathétique" symphony, his favourite piece of music of all time.  

The artistic theme for Tidal Lock is centered around powerful natural forces like gravity and tidal waves, painting a battle ground of the mighty weights of planets locking each other into intense, unbreakable relations. While no song is quite like the other, they all form a unity exploring powerful polemic emotions, feelings of entrapment and the glorious sensations of liberation and completion. From the ominous grinding bass notes of the Prelude, to the beautiful, climactic destruction of Grand Finale and the folk-inspired epilogue Open Horizon, Tidal Lock is an album which captivates the listener with its originality, embraceful vocals and catchy melodies, refusing to let you go.
