Trombone stuff

It's been a while since I've done an overdub so I knew the next one had to be powerful...

In the Star Wars films I've always been fascinated by how Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader. How does someone with such promise  have his sense of purpose so terribly twisted and misguided? How does he end up destroying everyone he loves and facing his beloved friend and mentor as an enemy?

I've always felt in many ways the music of John Williams tells these dramas better than the films. This trombone choir arrangement and overdub I did is a little suite I call "Lord Vader is Forged," It's a combination of "Anakin's Dark Deeds" (transcribed by ear by my good friend Shawn Standing) which goes attacca into "Battle of the Heroes." 

This is the music that accompanies the build up to, and ensuing light saber battle between Anakin and Obi Wan in "Revenge of the Sith" which ends with Anakin defeated and Lord Vader rising from the molten fires...

I especially find potent the transformation of the opening melody in the first minute, dark and round as it journeys towards rage and anger, unleashing fury.

I think I finally have an overdub to give "Duel of the Fates" a run for it's money...

Lord Vader is Forged

"Full Tilt" is a piece for 8 trombones composed by my good friend Tony DiLorenzo. In addition to being a gifted and fabulous composer, Tony is an incredible trumpet player. We worked together a lot back when we both lived in Salt Lake City. We've also played some tours with the Boston Pops. Not to mention we're both huge John Williams fans!

A ways back Tony asked me if I would give "Full Tilt" the "Jim Nova" treatment...here it is!

"Full Tilt" was commissioned by Dr. Bradley Palmer and the Schwob School of Music at CSU and premiered at the 2013 International Trombone Festival in Columbus, GA in June 2013. 

Tony writes this about it:

“In the Style and Spirit of the great film composer John Williams. I am dedicating this to him for his massive contribution to the orchestral world and his appreciation for classy and challenging writing for the trombone section. This original work is intended to simulate and pay homage to John's low brass writing by capturing the mood and character of a fictional scene, that can be both thrilling as well as light hearted.”

Not sure what year this is from, more than likely 1999 or 2000 when we had two groups playing it. I think the lineup was Frye, Walker (?), Christian, Sullivan(?), & Proctor
