03 Enter And Fall - So much to see (Alternative Version)

Described by The Independent as ‘The British Johnny Dowd’, Muleskinner Jones releases his third LP ‘A Dying Man Can Sure Sing The Blues’ on Monday 29th April 2013 on Red Meat Records and distributed by Cargo, Cat. No. MEATCD005.

It’s been almost five years since the release of his last LP, ‘Alcohol Tobacco Raygun?’, which Q described as ‘Sci-fi B-movies soundtracked by gonzo country’ and Uncut as ‘Ripsnorting hillbilly blues and demented deep twang.’ When asked for a reason for the delay Mr. Jones remarked ‘Some of these tunes demanded a banjo - and it takes a long time to learn the banjo.’

‘A Dying Man Can Sure Sing The Blues’ is a more restrained affair than its predecessor with simpler arrangements and more stripped-down instrumentation. The drum samples and drum machines are replaced with a mix of live drums and percussion recorded in Mr. Jones’ garage and garden shed. The new LP also features a number of contributing musicians, including a local church singing group. The result is a collection of songs that are more mature, less self- consciously ‘whacky’, and a more satisfying listening experience overall.

There’s also, despite the instrumentation being steeped in Americana influences, a markedly more English feel to this LP. The songwriting of Shane MacGowan is a clear influence on ‘The Homesick Soldier’, and tracks like ‘Little Dead Riding Hood’, ‘Hour Of The Blood-Orchid’ and ‘Song Of The Rain’ have an otherworldly quality that brings to mind the weird tales of British writers such as Arthur Machen and Algernon Blackwood.
‘It’s ten years since I moved from London to the countryside of the South-West’ says Mr. Jones. ‘There’s a palpable sense of an ancient and strange history here. After a while it seeps into your pores and I think it’s come out in some of these songs.’
