Emma hosts&nbsp;, organizer at&nbsp;, to discuss her recent book&nbsp;&nbsp;Then Emma is joined by&nbsp;, executive director of&nbsp;, to discuss the upcoming primary in Ohio's 11th Congressional District between Nina Turner and Shontel Brown.&nbsp;Daisy begins by discussing the tone of her work, as it focuses on what it *feels* like to build worker solidarity, rather than what happens along the road to success, diving into how this work was birthed well after the labor efforts, as she reflected on her connections with those that built the union alongside her. Next, she brings Emma back to the early 20th Century as they discuss the story of the Uprising of the 20,000, a mass strike amongst young women working in the New York shirtwaist industry – the biggest general strike by women in American history – and their incredible success in bringing over 500 employers to the table, winning better working conditions, wages, and much more, before they dive into the other side of the story, as Pitkin dives into the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, resulting in 146 (easily preventable) deaths, as the picture of early 1900 organizing paints the clear benefits of winning the union fight, and the devastating consequences of employers coming out on top. Then, Daisy brings us back to her experiences working with Arizona industrial laundry workers in the early 2000s, as she walks through the myriad dangers at the factories, from laborers like Alma in the soil-sort department working with bare hands to parse through used hospital garments, to others that had to climb through intensely heated machinery to avoid production delays. She then gets into the story of her and Alma’s undercover work in setting out to create a web of solidarity, looking to their blitz method of contacting and discussing unions with almost all 220 workers at the factory in 48 hours, setting up a meeting, and unpacking the commitment all 220 of them wanted to make together, before getting into the fight that followed – from the 200+ mandatory anti-union meetings in the three weeks that followed, to the illegal firing of Alma and three other leaders. After tying together the story of this effort with the following year-long fight against the illegal union-busting practices, and the incredible ruling that pushed a bargaining order on the employer, Emma and Daisy wrap up the interview with a discussion on what today’s labor moment can learn from these stories, why we should be optimistic, and the beauty of the bottom-up tidal wave that is the current labor movement. Emma also touches on President of Deference Joe Biden continuing to go along with whatever right-wing extremist judgment comes through, the continued devastation in Mariupol, and the catastrophe that has been Pete Buttigieg’s reign as the Secretary of Transportation. 3074 - Whither Fox's Downfall; McCarthy's Empty Hand; & Trumping DeSantis w/ Heather Digby Parton

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak to&nbsp;, History Ph.D candidate at the University of Pennslyvania, to discuss the recent developments in the Russian/Ukraine conflict that have transpired since Friday. Sam and Emma start off the week by checking in on the Faith &amp; Freedom Coalition Conference in Washington D.C., where a Liberty University communications official said, out loud and on camera, that the right needs to act more like Hitler and Stalin did to seize control of education. Then Kimberly joins the show to discuss the absolute chaos that has been the last 48 hours in the Russia/Ukraine conflict. Kimberly explains why, after the last time she was on the Majority Report in March of 2022, she isn't surprised by how protracted the conflict has been, and emphasizes that, per her scholarship and research, that the United States is not the principle actor in the war, and that the U.S., particularly the Biden Administration, most likely would prefer a negotiated settlement so as to forestall conservative attacks on the amount of military aid going to Ukraine. They then dive into the complex web of associations between Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the mercenary Wagner Group, Sergei Shoigu, the head of the Russian army, and Valery Gerasimov, the head of the war effort in Ukraine, and why exactly Prigozhin took this moment to turn his forces back from Ukraine and into Russia, in order to briefly occupy the city of Rostov-on-Don, before negotiating with Vladimir Putin and Belarus's Lukashenko to stand down and defect to Belarus. Sam and Emma ask Kimberly what she thinks is next going forward, whether Prigozhin can survive the mutiny attempt after the settlement with Putin, and what the end goals of any supposed rebellion like this would be for Prigozhin. Kimberly also warns against observers who see this as potentially the end of Putin's leadership in Russia, noting that, due to the overwhelming control of state media in the country, it's very hard to determine how much of this is actually getting through to the Russian public. It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with , director of the Washington office of the , to discuss the ongoing situation with the agency in Gaza. Then, she speaks with , President of&nbsp;, to discuss the recent  the CCI issued about the plastics industry.&nbsp;First, Emma runs through updates on the UN’s ceasefire vote, the ICJ’s hearings on Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, the Knesset’s attempt to expel Ofer Cassif, the decimation of Gaza, the expansion of Israel’s war, Trump’s demanding lead over the GOP, Alabama’s Supreme Court decision to further clamp down on reproductive rights, and West Virginia’s criminalization of librarians, before watching some of the major public actions in Europe ahead of Julia Assange’s extradition trial. Bill Deere then joins, diving right into the history of UNRWA’s founding in the wake of the 1948 Nakba as a “temporary” service to aid Palestinian refugees, that has since taken on a breadth of responsibility to feed, educate, and medicare millions of refugees across Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza in the 75 years since, working as a primary healthcare network, an education provider, and the primary humanitarian assistance provider, with little to no development towards an ends to their work. After touching on the overwhelming pressure that faces the 30k workers at UNRWA, Deere and Emma walk through the recent expansion of UNRWA activity in Gaza as Israel’s ethnic cleansing of the region has progressed, made all the more difficult by the devastating conditions and the active obstruction from Israeli demonstrators. Next, Bill briefly walks through the recent allegations of UNRWA involvement in 10/7, including Israel’s refusal to provide UNRWA with the actual proof, UNRWA’s decision to nonetheless fire those allegedly involved, and the international community’s revocation of funding in response, before touching on the devastating impact of that funding, and the ongoing attempts to keep UNRWA operating. Wrapping up, Deere explores the work UNRWA does with the Biden Administration, and what those of us outside of Government and NGOs can do to help. Richard Wiles then dives right into the myth of single-use plastic recycling and the recent revelations around the oil and gas industry’s multi-decade attempt to keep the plastics industry thriving at the expense of humanity. Wiles walks through the failure of the industry to push landfills and incineration as appropriate plastic disposal methods in the mid-1900s due to their obvious environmental impacts, looking to recycling as their answer – despite myriad internal studies that had shown it to be an expensive and wasteful process – presenting public demonstration project after public demonstration project alongside large sums of money to bring state and local governments on board with their bunk science. Wrapping up, Wiles and Emma explore the various legal battles going on in an attempt to hold the industry accountable for their societal harms, and what to expect from them moving forward. Emma also expands on the recent decision out of Alabama to categorize frozen embryos as children. 1907 - The Poisoned City: Flint's Water and the American Urban Tragedy With Anna Clark

On today's show,&nbsp;Jamila Michener&nbsp;(@povertyscholar), Professor in the department of Government at Cornell University, joins us to discuss her new book, Fragmented Democracy: Medicaid, Federalism, and Unequal Politics. Medicaid is one of the most fundamental aspects of the US federal safety net, however it is fractured and constantly under attack by state governments, especially in GOP-controlled states. Michener explains that states have very expansive control over what they will and will not cover for its Medicaid recipients. The way that Americans provide care is fragmented and inconsistent. Michener says American social policy towards people living in poverty is one where we give people as little help as possible. States should have an much discretion as possible when dealing with its poor people. This is most illustrative in the difference between Medicare and Medicaid. In the former we have a nationalized program where the funding and policy is set by the federal program; and in the latter a program that is different from state to state, leaving a vulnerable class at the whims of its state's balance sheet. Michener and Sam also consider lower class involvement in the political process and how their action or absence influences election outcomes.
