As a diplomat's child, my childhood was a kaleidoscope of experiences, yet my perception of Australia was limited to iconic figures like Steve Irwin and Kylie Minogue. This, coupled with a fear of the unknown and a romanticized view of Europe, led me to suppress a vital part of myself.

Years spent in the UK fostered an indoor lifestyle, a disconnect from community, and an overcomplicated view of life. My inner child, yearning for the carefree spirit of my Zambian childhood, remained dormant.

Then came Sydney. Its vibrant cosmopolitanism, initially surprising, soon awakened something profound within me. The expansive Australian landscape – the raw beauty, the emphasis on outdoor living – resonated deeply, stirring a forgotten sense of freedom and adventure.

It was as if I was returning to my essence, reconnecting with the vibrant, adventurous spirit that had always been a part of me. The vibrant community, the simple joys of sharing a meal outdoors, and the embrace of the natural world mirrored the carefree spirit of my Zambian childhood.

"Down Under" is a celebration of this unexpected rediscovery – a joyous return to my authentic self, a newfound sense of belonging in this unexpected corner of the world, and a testament to the power of embracing the unexpected.

SOUL singer, songwriter and proud Zambian, Major Zulu now calls Sydney home. Over an international career in London, Paris and Sydney, Major Zulu has collaborated with Grammy Award winning band Basement Jaxx, performed alongside Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, Paolo Nutini, and Earth Wind and Fire, and released an EP of original songs with another on the way.

Major Zulu is known for her jazz-soul sound with an international flair. In Australia, she has performed to sell out shows including the Sydney International Jazz Festival, Jazz in the Vineyards and Art Gallery of NSW. music.

Major’s original music tells us stories of love, loss, yearning but also shines with the beauty of positivity. It holds the echoes of a childhood under colonial rule in Zambia, where her father was imprisoned for his beliefs, explores the human condition, then it lifts us up with hope.

Major's earthy vocal tones, timeless songs and artful storytelling make every performance an emotional journey.

Major's critically acclaimed EP, "The DIY Project Called Life," was released in 2021. She is set to release her new self-titled EP, "I'm Major Zulu," on May 2, 2025, proudly sponsored by Create NSW. Major debuted her first single, "Honey Honey," on November 29, 2024, followed by her second single, "Down Under," which was released on January 30, 2025.

Major Zulu will release her third single, "Music Sounds Better," on April 3, 2025, with a performance scheduled to follow at the Art Gallery NSW on Saturday, April 12, 2025..
