2FULL — Dream Falling

The In the Moment Remix Tape reworks the already-chopped, altered, and looped spontaneous compositions of Makaya McCraven's 2xLP In the Moment. Crossing the boundaries of improvisation, composition and sampling, nine producer/beat makers from around the globe reworked the tracks into new beats and creations of repurposed audio. Makaya then remixed their remixes into two continuous mixtape sides, blending them with beats of his own, resampling the samplers of his original sliced and sampled spontaneous compositions.

We dropped their debut single on the label back in March and it instantly caught on with all the sweet soul fans. This new 7” showcases the funkier, jazzier but equally soulful side of Brainstory. Their debut album “Buck”, produced entirely by Leon Michels is due out in October of 2019.The A side, “Breathe”, takes a page out of the Shuggie Otis playbook and then flips the script with some stoned out, west coast swag. In the words of Kevin, Brainstory’s lead chanteur, “Breathe is a song about letting go of the emotional baggage of our lives in order to become who we truly are. Brainstory - Breathe - BC085-45 - Side A

Born and raised in South London, Hector Plimmer is a multi-faceted producer, composer and DJ whose sound is drenched in tribal rhythms and beautifully crafted bass. Influenced by beat-makers like Flying Lotus and Theo Parrish, but with the subtleties of the classic Metalheadz era drum and bass, his second album 'Next To Nothing' is released on 25th October 2019. The album features guests Ego Ella May, Emma-Jean Thackray, Pie Eye Collective, Alexa Harley; and Andrew Ashong who guests on new single ‘Somebody Else’.

After featuring on Brownswood Bubblers 11, curated by Gilles Peterson, Hector proved his talent when he was selected as a winner of the PRS Steve Reid InNOVAtion award.  At a performance at ‘Sounds Of The Universe’ Record store, Hector caught the attention of Albert's Favourites' label heads Adam Scrimshire & Dave Koor. A conversation was started which led to the transfer of almost a whole album's worth of material and resulted in his debut full length record ‘Sunshine’. 

'Sunshine' was met with rapturous acclaim. The record went on to be awarded Gilles Peterson’s album of the week on his BBC 6 Music show and was championed by both Lauren Laverne and Tom Ravenscroft on the station as well as Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2. Its success on the airwaves transcended to streaming with the inclusion in the top 50 viral US chart on Spotify.

"This album has been a real labour of love. I spent the most part of a year trying to make music I thought would be fitting to follow my last album, whilst not actually knowing what that might sound like. 'Sunshine' had been received way more positively than I had anticipated and although praise is a lovely thing, it was the cause of much anxiety when the time came to start on this record. I put a lot of pressure on myself to produce music and kept going down routes that felt forced or just didn’t click for me, in hindsight I realise this was me making music not for myself, but for what I imagined other people might want to hear. In a way 'Next to Nothing' is my first real album, 'Sunshine' was more like a collection of four to five years worth of music compiled into the shape of one. This is my first dedicated attempt at creating a cohesive project, something that shows who I am right now and what got me here."

As a DJ Hector has a monthly slot on NTS radio. He has played alongside the likes of Gilles Peterson, Kutmah, Alexander Nut, MNDSGN, Onra, Dego, Kaidi, Max Graef & Glenn Astro; Hector finds himself in the good company of those talented selectors who play genres across the spectrum of Hip-hop, Beats, Funk, Soul, Disco, Afro-beat, House and Jazz.

A Quest Called Tribe begins with the series of portraits drawn by Stéphane Carricondo in 2017 dedicated to Hip Hop legends.
As close partner in art Medline proposed to create a soundtrack for them, and first interpreting ATCQ's classics with elements of the past, present and future.

The best way to materialize this multidimensional tribute was obviously a vinyl. And it's the one we unveil today.

On the visual side:
ATCQ's portraits are composing the front cover and, assembled into a great scene, are printed on a colorful A2 poster. Stéphane Carricondo's natural lines are highlighting each member's soul map. The alchemy of the dark ink on emptiness gives to them an impressive sparkle of life .

On the musical side:
The classic themes are transformed into a polymorphic fusion, were jazz, funk and soul from the original sample sources converse with Tribe's characteristic beats. Medline added a hint of his magic, unique rhythms, improvisations, arrangements, original orchestration and inspired melodies.

The album is an ode to the band that marked both artist's life and mind. A cultural print and school of sound that designed Hip Hop foundations. With a blooming expression Medline and Stéphane Carricondo are going to the roots of ATCQ in a quest for the tribe.

Blurring the lines of digital and live music, Living Beats bridges the gap between live performance, production and improvisation. The music organically spawned from a live session with Makaya McCraven on drums, MPC (Radius ECT) and DJ Moppy of CutzonCutz. Makaya used these improvisations as the inspiration for these beats adding keyboards, bells and percussion new melodies and renditions off Makaya's recent record, "Split Decision." Additional production and mixing were done by Chris Kramer of Tensei and a special guest appearance was made by the hip hop Violinist Savoir Faire and has been featured in Facemelt's ChiSound II compilation.
