So there’s some moving parts here…

First, I’ve been revisiting a lot of my older material to post it to SoundCloud. I’ve been remastering it, and remixing what I can, if I have all of the original files or tapes to do so. The material from my Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow EP from 2006 has aged, I think, particularly well, and has had the most listens of any of the songs that I’ve posted.

At the same time I’ve been doing some voice-over work, and I’ve seen the replacement of human voices with AI, to varying degrees of success. As a creative person who does visual art, music, and voice-overs, I find the AI takeover to be particularly alarming. The line between human and machine performance is blurring. Some AI stuff makes me laugh at how bad it is, but some of it is becoming scary good. I encountered an AI voice-over recently that would have fooled me if I didn’t know, going in, that it was AI. 

AI visual art is taking over social media, and is becoming accepted as being “legitimate” art in a way that dramatically devalues human creativity. While it is often easy to tell what is AI and what isn’t, the lines are blurring.

So with these two things going on -- the revisiting of the Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow material, and the AI onslaught -- I decided that I wanted to re-record at least the title track from that EP. That song is one of my early experiments in making music using odd meters and polymeters. While AI may soon start being able to make “believable” pop music, there is no reason for it to make weird music in odd meters and polymeters. The market for such music isn’t large enough to focus on that. So I feel like that may be the only way in which my creative work isn’t going to be completely replaceable soon. 

This recording is a dramatically different take on the song than the one I had 18 years ago. It went in a way more pop punk direction than I was expecting, especially for a song that has large sections in 7/8 and 11/8. But when it started heading that direction I just leaned right in, and I really dig the end result.
