Country Walk - Intro & Outro Music for Podcast “茶蛋说”

(Summer 2023)

Inspired by the symbolism of ‘water’ in Taoism, where water has the great power to flow into everything but with ease and grace, I’d like to further investigate the movement of water by the perception of sound only through the soundscape composition, with regard to the field recordings of the actual river flow.

I made the field recording along the Thames Foreshore at Greenwich near Cutty Sark, where I chose two specific sites to discover the movement of tides via various sounds of ebbs and flows particularly. For the soundscape composition, I use music improvisation with minimalist composition techniques to demonstrate the continuous and steady flow of the tide movements, incorporating my own interpretation that relates to the actual sounds of the water recorded.

A long-form soundscape composition regarding a soundwalk at Mudchute Park and Farm, with emphasis on the relationship and the interaction between natural sounds and human talking voices within that kind of specific sonic environment. 

Plus, human talking voices can also be related to the linguistic studies, especially the sociolinguistics, and for me myself, as a native Chinese speaker, then I would also like to investigate the speech intelligibility of Chinese and English through the talking during soundwalking.

Mudchute Soundwalk

(Summer 2023)

Drawing inspiration from Kurt Schwitters’s sound collage piece "Ursonate," where I found out the change of the pitch through verbal words in that sound poem, so I intended to make some experimental practice with the sound collage technique, related to the linguistic studies. While I myself, as a native Chinese speaker, would therefore like to creatively and critically explore the change in pitch and tone of my mother tongue, Chinese, by sound collage.

Eat, Ate, Eaten

(Summer 2023)

Taking inspiration from Lily Greenham’s "Lingual Music," I made this sound collage work based on the scripted words, which was actually a famous modern Chinese poem, a two-line poem titled “One Generation,” written by Gu Cheng (顾城《一代人》), having more critical and insightful emphasis on the literature aspects through sound collage.

Also, musical improvisation was used corresponding to the voices of certain phrases, in response to the atmosphere of the poetry, adding more dark colors.

Dark and Bright

(May 2024)

Deeply inspired by Virginia Woolf's quote, "I am rooted, but I flow," from “The Waves,” as a female musician having grown up in a cross-cultural environment ever since childhood, then I have a new reflection on my own cultural and musical identity, where I am rooted in my own Chinese culture, but I do not just stick to this; instead, I keep flowing like water and embrace all cultures. 

Referring to that, I attempt to make a fusion of Chinese and Western music through this long-form water soundscape composition, interpreting the relationship between me myself and water within the sonic environment I created, which blends the field recordings of natural sounds along the River Thames and the variations on a famous folk song from my hometown Shanghai, "Song of the Four Seasons" (《四季歌》), through piano improvisation together, also drawing inspiration from Ravel’s "Jeux d'eau" and "Une barque sur l'océan", Cécile Chaminade’s "L'Ondine", Op 101, and Li Ying-Hai’s "Music at Sunset" (黎英海《夕阳箫鼓》).

Water Meets Spring 四季·春水

(May 2025)

Influenced by the symbolism of water in Taoism, where it is the softest and most yielding substance, to overcome the hard and rigid, yet nothing can compete with it, it also made me associate with the power of the oscillation of the water molecules during the phase change. 

So, how would the movement of water molecules from liquid to gas sound? 

This water soundscape composition uses the water sound as the main narrative device, presenting the process of water circulation on a microscopic level, i.e. the frequency fluctuations of the water molecules, regarding different forms and stages of water, from a flowing tap, to a fountain, the River Thames, and finally boiling water.

H₂Oscillation 湍形

(August 2025)

Just as "you cannot put wind in a bag," this wind soundscape composition depicts a journey of the wind from a moving perspective, starting from South Kensington Circle line station to Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, then to my uni, and finally to the Island Gardens, also incorporating my piano improvisation.

Inspired by the Taoist metaphor of “riding the wind,” which seeks to live in harmony with the wind rather than control it, I came up with a wind-related intermediary, the kite, to perceive the wind through a somewhat sense of touching—I borrowed kiting techniques for my piano improvisation to respond to the wind movement and its acoustic surroundings from a multisensory perspective, while also embarking on a journey of self-discovery, from riding the wind to fighting with the wind and eventually becoming the wind.
