Christopher James Rowland is a painter and musician born “Ma'heonehoo'estse” (Man from Holy Place), and was raised on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, at Lame Deer, Montana. His family heritage is Northern Cheyenne (Tsitsistas) and Lakota.

Christopher began his commercial oil painting career at the age of 15. In 1987, the young artist appeared as "White Cloud," a vision character, in his first feature film, "Pow Wow Highway." The film won Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Actor awards from the Native American Film Festival. Christopher made additional artistic contributions to the film by painting the film’s classic car prop, Philbert's War Pony, "The Protector."

His artwork mentors have included Jack Hines and Jessica Zemsky; Neil Parsons, a Blackfoot Indian, abstract artist, and professor of fine art; and the world-renowned Howard Terpning. In 2006, Christopher was appointed Cultural Ambassador for the Northern Cheyenne Nation. He served in that post for two years.

janet McCloud (also known as Yet-Si-Blue; March 30, 1934 – November 25, 2003) was a prominent Native American and indigenous rights activist. Her activism helped lead to the 1974 Boldt Decision, for which she was dubbed "the Rosa Parks of the American Indian Movement."[1] She co-founded Women of All Red Nations (WARN) in 1974. The first convening of the Indigenous Women's Network was in her backyard in Yelm, Washington in August 1985.

Cantwell Statement on the Passing of Former Washington State Senator and Tulalip Tribal Leader John McCoy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, at a U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs hearing, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), made this statement about the passing of Tulalip tribal leader and former Washington state Senator John McCoy.

“And if I could just take a moment to recognize the passing of one of our tribal leaders, John McCoy from the Tulalip Reservation,” said Sen. Cantwell. “Not only was he a 20-year member of the United States Air Force and a tribal leader at Tulalip, but he served our state legislature both as a representative and a senator, and we will miss him dearly.”  

Sen. Cantwell’s comments came moments before the committee passed S. 1723, the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies in the United States Act, addressing an issue of personal importance to Sen. McCoy.  Sen. McCoy’s father was fluent in the Tulalip Tribe’s language but refused to teach it, saying “they beat it out of me” at boarding school.  In 2005, as a member of the state House of Representatives, he helped win passage of a bill that encourages school districts to teach Native history and culture and to consult Tribes in developing that curriculum.  Sen. McCoy continued to work on the issue in the State Senate, and was instrumental in passage of 2015 legislation to expand what is today the innovative “Since Time Immemorial:  Tribal Sovereignty in Washington State” curriculum. 

The legislation passed out of committee today is consistent with Sen. McCoy’s view that “we must teach history – the good, the bad, the ugly – so that everybody understands how Indians were treated.” 

Sen. McCoy served the State of Washington’s 38th district for nearly two decades -- in the Washington House of Representatives from 2003-2013, and in the State Senate from 2013 until his retirement in 2020.

One of the premier songwriters of the rock era, Robbie Robertson was born July 5, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario. The son of a Jewish father and Mohawk mother, Jaime Robbie Robertson's first brush with live music came at the Six Nations Reservation, his mother's girlhood home; at the age of five, he also gained exposure to the country music of rural America. Not long after, he began taking guitar lessons from a cousin, and gradually began composing his first songs. As time wore on, his musical interests evolved from country to big band to rock, and he eventually dropped out of school to pursue a career as a performer. In 1958, he hooked up with rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins' backing band the Hawks, joining fellow sidemen Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel. Taylor Krise is a self-taught artist from the Squaxin Island Tribe. He is primarily a carver, but also produces drawings and digital designs for use on clothing and print work.

Krise is a fisherman and geoduck diver and lives with his partner and children on the Olympic peninsula. He is proud to continue learning about his heritage and to carry forward his culture in his everyday life and through his artistic practice.

Paul “Che oke ten” Wagner is an internationally-performing ambassador of the traditional songs & stories of his Coast Salish tribal ancestors. He enjoys sharing the warmth, humor & wisdom of these beautiful “teachings,” as they are know in the sacred tradition of his people, in an engaging & interactive way, interweaving his Spirit-gifted songs on Native American flute, along with traditional tribal drum songs. An award-winning Native American flutist, his instrumental songs have come to him with visions of healing & prayer for all relations (tree people, animal people, human people).

Che oke ten hails from the Wsaanich (Saanich) tribe of southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, whose spirit helpers are the Thunderbird & the Whale. His ancestral name, “Che oke ten” carries the meaning of a feeling of “watching over & caring for the people & things you love for a thousand seasons.”

Che oke ten’s performing art has evolved into a feast for the senses, incorporating live sampling sound equipment to interlace Native flute, drum, voice & other musical instruments into a mesmerizing backdrop to the traditional spoken-word stories… accompanied by visual high-resolution projection of his stunning & surreal nature photography & videography work, which encapsulates the incredible beauty of the natural world so important to his culture.

Che oke ten’s traditional training & immersion in his tribal language enable him to share the teachings & Sacred Breath tradition of many generations of previous storytellers. He has a deep connection with the stories & ancient ways, understanding the profound life-changing effects they can have on people of all ages & cultures. He feels it is important to keep the indigenous teachings alive in the hearts of the people of today’s world & to honor the original ancestors of the place in which any gathering of peoples occurs.

Che oke ten’s debut Native flute CD “Journey of the Spirit” has been honored by the “Best Native American Album of 2009″ JPF Award, a CD-Baby-affiliated international award involving both people’s choice voting & industry critic panel selection & judging. It has currently sold more than 1,000 copies. His available recordings also include “Prophecy Teachings of the First Peoples of the Northwest Coast” (a collaboration with his cousin, Johnny Moses), & a limited-edition solo storytelling CD entitled, “Creation Stories.”

Che oke ten’s current projects include a DVD featuring his breathtaking high-resolution nature videography & photography work to be accompanied by his original Native flute music (plus other instruments); a new Native flute CD; and plans for a second tour of Japan.

Che oke ten has shared the stage & collaborated with many prominent artists such as Eyvind Kang, Gina Sala, Bill Frisell, Andre Feriante & Charlie Hill. His international performances have included the Mongolian Peoples Federation for World Peace Conference in Seoul, Korea, a recent successful six-city tour of Japan, & many venues in British Columbia. Nac’a (traditional leader) Arvol Looking Horse is the Founder of World Peace & Prayer Day and Honoring Sacred Sites Day.  Recognized as the spiritual leader of the Lakota, Dakota and North Nakota Sioux Nations, he was born on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota, and at twelve years old became the youngest, 19th Generational Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe Bundle.
He has dedicated his life to working for change and fulfilling the sacred prophecy known as “Mending the Sacred Hoop of the Nation”.  In carrying out his commitment to religious freedom, sacred site protection and cultural survival and revival, Nac’a Looking Horse lectures at universities, conferences and symposiums around the world and has met with and established relationships with world leaders, including Desmond Tutu, President Barack Obama and the Dalai Llama.

As well as being invited to speak at President Bill Clinton’s 1996 inauguration, Nac’a Looking Horse’s prayers have opened numerous sessions at the United Nations.  His many awards include the 2006 Temple of Understanding Juliet Hollister Award from the UN.  Previous recipients include the Dalai Llama, Nelson Mandela and Queen Noor.

John Murray, the Blackfeet Tribe’s historic preservation officer says the Badger-Two Medicine is sacred land. As he walks through the tall dry grass here, he refuses to give life to the idea that this land will be disturbed in search of natural gas.

The Badger-Two Medicine area is 165,000 acres of U.S. Forest Service land adjacent to Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.

Caro Gonzales. I am 26. I am Chemehuevi and a two spirit. I am an organizer for Idle No More.  Me and my wife have been in Standing Rock since August.  We are organizing direct actions, rallies, art projects, Lakota language schools, with organizations like the Indigenous Environmental Network, 350.org, Green Peace, the Indigenous People Power Project, and the International Indigenous Youth Council to raise awareness and stop the Dakota Access Pipeline. We are also working with Senator Bernie Sanders and the National Congress of Indians to create policy solutions that respect indigenous people. We plan on staying here in Standing Rock through the winter to continue halting construction. To do this we need to have a structure that can last us though the winter. We hope to purchase a camper van, so that we can be mobile and not freeze. We need your help to stop this pipeline. We need your help to keep this camp going through the winter. 20 year-old Quinault Member Jimmy Smith-Kramer was killed in an alleged racially-charged confrontation. Smith-Kramer was injured on Saturday and died from his injuries on Sunday May 28th, 2017.
