As a group, we all share a background in Kinesiology, the study of human movement. Why do you feel this is an important field of study?

What was your favorite course in your Kinesiology studies at Cal State East Bay and why?

Lauren spoke to how she is one of only female coaches - does it impact your experience? Are there any barriers you face as a coach?

The Kinesiology program at East Bay is pretty unique in that there is a very broad core - with a variety of core courses in the social sciences and humanities, and centered around social justice. I'd love to hear from each of you how you think this broad core might have served to prepare you for being a professional out in the field?

Christina, can you share about why you chose Cal State East Bay for your undergraduate studies and how you feel that the courses you took prepared you for your current career goals?

Jared, can you speak to the importance of getting to know Cal State East Bay’s faculty and staff and how that shaped your interest in the Kinesiology Program?

Lauren and Ebo, I’d love to hear both of your insights on this one. Do you have any advice for students considering pursuing a master’s program in Kinesiology?

Ebo, I’d love it if you could share a bit more about Running for A Better Oakland and what coaching for that nonprofit looks like.

Lauren, Christina, and Jared, I am aware that you all have spent some time within a coaching role. Can you each share about that experience, speaking to any challenges with facilitating a diverse and inclusive space?

you each instill some words of wisdom for students who are considering or currently studying either at East Bay, or at other universities?

Sustainability in sport involves three main components or pillars of sustainability. We should think about economic security, social justice and environmental quality. The goal within sustainability is balance, balancing these 3 pillars so as to achieve the most sustainable practices in our current and future sporting world. Sustainability relates to sport by the equipment and facilities used, the means of viewing the event, the resources involved for powering and creating an event at a particular location, and much more. Social justice will be critical to the viability of sports going forward. Climate change has already made profound impacts on both local and global sports, and we should consider innovative ways of tackling this issue.

Making Moves Ep. 10: Sustainability in Sport

This conversation on gender equity in sport  details the importance of celebrating the success of Title IX, contributions from the AIAW, and the move towards sport for all. However, there must also be the acknowledgment of the disproportionate representation of BIPOC women. Making Moves Ep. 13: Mental Health in sport

In this episode Boxing for Justice, we get the dialogue going with stand-out speakers Dalia 'La Pantera' Gomez and Alfredo Gopa. Boxing is arguably one of the most demanding, intense sports there is. In this episode, we will take a look at the often overlooked beauty of boxing: its power to catalyze self-realization and its ability to strengthen communities. The experts on this episode are two longtime, local Bay Area boxing coaches, Alfredo Gopa & Dalia ‘La Pantera’ Gomez, who dedicate much of their time to the youth of Oakland. Making Moves Ep. 16: Former CSUEB Graduates and Their Careers

It was a thrill to hear from Robert Marcus, the Chief Community Impact Officer from Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). We also spoke with Khali Blackman-Newton, the Director of Community Engagement in Northern California for PCA. Both discussed the PCA’s mission to change culture and behavior throughout youth sports. This is fulfilled through establishing the PCA’s first youth sports coalition, focusing on establishing a community-specific Sports Equity Coalition to create and implement a Sports Equity Agenda specific to the local community. This is called the Oakland Sport Equity and Access Coalition (SEAC). The two guests share a bit about their reasons for facilitating these convenings, while speaking to the importance of representation for youth of color within low-income neighborhoods when participating in sports.
