World Beats

Super-Sonic Jazz was the first album to be released on El Saturn Records, the label run by Sun Ra and his business partner Alton Abraham. Set up in 1955, they released their first singles, including a doo-wop group The Cosmic Rays and the Arkestra's Saturn, at the beginning of 1956, and had recorded the whole of their first album by the end of the year, to be released in March 1957. El Saturn is now considered, along with Charles Mingus and Max Roach’s Debut label and Harry Partch’s Gate 5 label, "one of the very first and most active artist-owned record labels." Often pressed in editions of 75 — sometimes as few as 20 were made for specific concerts — the records would be manufactured using local black businesses, and often put together in Abraham's own home.

After the success of their previous albums Owiny Sigoma Band’s forthcoming long player “Nyanza" continues to bring eclectic and intriguing musical ideas to the table.

Following from the release of "Changaa Attack", Owiny Sigoma Band bring fresh perspectives to cross-cultural collaborations. To make this record, master Luo musicians Joseph Nyamungu and Charles Owoko, invited the London contingent of the band to the Nyanza province of Kenya in the heart of a region called Luoland, to discover the roots of Luo Music. Travelling with a suitcase full of recording equipment the band set up studios on the fly. Louis Hackett the bands bass player produced this hypnotic response after a 12 hour changaa fueled session of hard Nyatiti soundclash. Utilising Owoko’s fierce Nyiduongue drumming and a one take vocal workout from Nyamungu, “Luo Land" is another wayward dancefloor workout for the late night freaks.

On the A-side label artist Sam Irl brings Dub culture onto electronic dance floors. Dreams is a forward driven introspective dub track built around a heavy steppas-influenced rhythm and deep bassline. Expect his full-length solo debut album to released later this year on Jazz & Milk!

Mieux is a young upcoming duo from Vienna known from their Boiler Room live performance or their debut EP on Up My Alley! With Technotrap they contribute a playful and dreamy uptempo tune that cleverly balances a straight-forward driven beat with harmonic and repetitive melodic figures.

Label head Dusty joins the EP with a slow-house MPC jam called Heavy Lights. After a dreamy intro the track soon fades into a hypnotic direction based on percussive vibes, big bottom samples and heavy hitting snares.

Todd Simon's arrangement, blending multiple versions of a classic for his 21-piece ensemble featuring himself on Flügelhorn and Alan Lightner on Steel Drums. Recorded live to tape in an 80 year-old studio located in the heart of Hollywood.

Paradise Bangkok, in collaboration with Sheba Sound, continues its exploration into the connecting points between East African, Arabic and South East Asian music, first begun on their two 'Eastern Connection' compilations.

'Out of Addis' presents a selection of contemporary recordings from Ethiopia. The Horn of Africa nation is most often associated with the famous Ethio-Funk sounds produced during the latter years of the Imperial era, which lasted until 1974. But in this defiant culture – Ethiopia was the only African state never to be colonised by Western powers – the golden age for music never ended, despite decades of war and social upheaval.

Sheba Sound, a label and sound system collective based in Addis, wanted to redress this by recording and releasing little-known classics to Ethiopian and foreign audiences.

Ethiopia is a vast and mostly rural country, which could be why a collection of this breadth has rarely been achieved. This album is the product of more than six years of music digging, road trips, recordings and events, from the northern rocky expanses of Tigray to the central forested highlands of Oromia to the western sweltering grasslands of Gambella. 

This music touches the tip of the iceberg of what is happening right now in Ethiopia. There are so many more unique, intoxicating sounds to be shared, testifying to the diversity that lives on.  

After these recordings were finished, the mixing and mastering was done in the U.K. This added weight and depth to the originals, giving organic sounds a modern twist so they can be played at dance-floors and bars.

Populous is Andrea Mangia, a producer hailing from Lecce, a small city on the heel of Italy's boot. In 2003, he made his first jaunt into the music world with the album Quipo (via Morr Music). In 2005 he released Queue For Love, influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy's Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) and in 2008 he released Drawn in Basic. Both albums were widely received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global music map. He became known for the way he seamlessly blends digital sounds with the analog warmth of soul/hip-hop/whatever else he's influenced by at the time.

In 2014, he released Night Safari via Bad Panda Records. The album, for Populous, was the embodiment of a dream. "This record is an imaginary nighttime safari to discover uncontaminated landscapes, strange creatures, wild animals, and mysterious lights," he told Thump Magazine. The record received praise from international media outlets, and was revered for its ability to sonically transcend borders.

Azulejos, his forthcoming release, has a South American tinge to it (and is even partly in Spanish). He moved to Lisbon, Portugal to start work on the album bringing with him only a laptop, a small MIDI keyboard, and a microphone. "Lisbon became both my studio and my muse," he says. He wandered the city collecting field recordings— from trams to people singing on street corners. He sifted through flea markets for records to use for sampling (exclusively Portuguese and South American). Populous describes Lisbon as a city 'halfway between South American soul and European modernity, African in some aspects, and dramatically melancholic." He channeled these poignant fusions into Azulejos, named for the typical tiled facades in Portugal— simultaneously bright and decaying. The album features collaborations with Nina Miranda of Smoke City and Ela Minus, among others. It's a love letter to Lisbon, and a dreamy quilt of sounds he both grew up with and heard for the first time during his influential stay in Portugal.
