For the 23rd installment of Rusted Rhythms, Sortof Vague and Vinja team up to present a hair-raising mix ripe with delicious vinyl cuts. Sam Whittingham (Sortof Vague), the man behind the decks, is a Colorado native with a keen ear for musical atmospheres. Vince Santora (Vinja), commanding the turntables, is a veteran rhythm curator. Together, their talents align into a mutagenic 45-minute melee. Weaving through drum and bass, half-time, and neuro formats, this mix is an appeal to the adrenaline junkie. The mixing itself is an art to behold. Each successive track and transition compliments not just the track it overtakes, but the sum of the extended musical journey. Honing in especially on bone-crushing bass lines, the tracklist features a brutal collaboration between Sortof Vague and Vinja, as well as cuts from NOISIA, DJ Madd, Metafloor, Detox Unit, and a host of other producers dug out from the deep wells of bass music. The musical roots in my family go back to my grandfather, Sid Barbato, an exceptional jazz clarinetist, who passed on the values of music to his many children, my father included. I wanted to put something together that combined these roots of jazz with current electronic styles I am inspired by, and this is the result. This very special set features the music of several of my family members, mixed with some originals as well as music of other producers I like, premiered with the Starborn Productions Jazz Brunch takeover for Industry Strong's 76hr livestream event. I am grateful for having a family that taught me music as one of the greatest pleasures in life, and I hope that this helps keep the vibrant genre of jazz alive and celebrated.

MALAKAI is the musical vision of Brooklyn based producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist, Malakai Linden. Drawing on a wide range of influences, his music strives to bridge a gap between electronic and acoustic spaces, incorporating sounds of real-world instruments into an eclectic brand of bass driven electronic beats. Following a pattern of organic growth, MALAKAI’s live sets consist of a carefully curated and immersive journey through a multitude of musical flavors.

MALAKAI began producing in 2011 at the age of 17 under the guidance of acclaimed producer/guitarist Derek VanScoten (Cloudchord, D.V.S*) and went on to earn a degree in Music Technology from New York University. In 2017, he teamed up with Wyler Sanca and Francesco Ferran to form The Rust Music, a record label, blog and production company dedicated to showcasing forward-thinking music and art in NYC. 

Since his start, MALAKAI has shared stages with internationally renowned artists such as Emancipator, Desert Dwellers, Ott, Random Rab, Clozee, and Purity Ring, and appeared at numerous festivals across the northeast including Wild Woods Music (NH), Camp Bisco (PA), and Great North (ME).

Over the past year, MALAKAI has been featured on releases through Desert Trax (Antumbral Shadow - compiled by Desert Dwellers), and The Rust Music (Saros EP, Oxidized Vol. 2). Looking to the future there are a number of new projects on his plate, including several collaborations, singles and more to be released in 2018.
