#3 The Science of Bleep

Born somewhere in Yorkshire in the late 80s Bleep Techno was one of the first truly British sounding sub-genres of House and Techno. Typified by heavy dub-reggae inspired basslines, haunting choral vocals and samples that bleeped, clonked and clanged their way along, Bleep Techno has remained one of the more obscure strains of dance music. Bleep went on to inspire producers around the world (some of that can be found in this mix) and still sounds like the future despite its age.

This mix is dedicated to Rob Gordon and respect goes out to Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford.

Ronan is the moniker of producer and artist Robin Lohrey. The American DJ is releasing the second EP under this alias. Entitled Radical Acceptance, it shares a title with psychologist and meditation teacher Tara Brach’s book which inspired him in a key moment of his life. The introspective five-track affair that was recorded in a secluded cabin in the woods and will be released on Seattle-based Budget Cuts, a label pushing bold and eclectic sounds since 2015.

Today we are premiering the title track and A2 on the record. A slowly building piece, its foundation is rooted in harder sounds yet it doesn’t come across as aggressive. Despite the upbeat nature of the drums, they’re mixed in a way that retains the warmth of the overall composition. The lush pads carry a deeper tone while the twinkling keys add a few rays of sunshine into the fold. The rumbling bass is the cherry on top as the piece climaxes into an almost euphoric wave. There are certainly a variety of influences in this piece alone, let alone the whole EP which we highly recommend you lend an ear to. You can pre-order your copy here.

It’s always special to be part of a record label’s birth, so we’re stoked to welcome London label Dance Regular to our catalogue of premieres with the B1 – For You Around Me by Trev – from their first record. 
James Rudie and EVM128 have started the label, which they say will orbit around styles like House, Bruk, Soul, Jazz, Boogie, Half Time, Jungle, Ragga, and more. Multiple records are already set for release in 2019, but the first, which includes our premiere track, will be up for grabs from 7th June. 

Body Music Vol 1 is its name – a six-track, various artist EP. From the dark wobbly bass of the opening track by Xtra Brux, to the light and playful melodies on the B2 by Szajna, the musical diversity here is striking. 

For You Around Me is an intelligent, jazz-house fusion whose intensity undulates in parallel with ethereal strings. It features a 50/50 mix of 4x4 and more breakbeat, syncopated drums. Layered keys, including a quintessential jazz sound in a Rhodes keyboard, lull us into the onset of strings and drums, each escalating until the bass kicks in shortly after the minute-mark and the track takes off. 

Overall, it’s six-minutes of intriguing rhythms soaked, in a measured way, with melodies that move back and forth between flowing moodiness in House form and lighter, more glitchy jazz.
