Because they were always hungry… And they always hunted. Each day - just after the sun went down. And they could see you and find you, no matter what! Woe to you was your soul not pure - they would’ve smelled your sins and hunted you down. And then your soul was no more… Then you were one of them. Always hungry… Always hunting…
