As a production team, Run Stop Restore has been a pragmatic group with Marc Houle, Troy Pierce and Magda pursuing their own hectic schedules of production and performance. Recently, the three members have taken the opportunity to meet in the same studio to combine their unique ideas. Their Items and Things imprint - a label set up as an output for new projects, collaborations and ideas with a distinctly left of centre attitude is primarily run by wireless communication. After a pair of compilation EPs, the first act to receive a dedicated release was Click Box - the brainchild of Marco Silva and Pedro Turra whose tough, retro sound, non-conformist arrangements and skilful sound design fitted perfectly to the I&T ethos. The relationship has obviously grown at speed, culminating in this two track Minus release recorded during a five day session in Sao Paulo, Brazil. With all five artists jamming together on a host of analog synths and a low slung bass guitar contribution from Marc Houle.

The collaboration produces two cylindrical grooves that work like a thermos flask - signifying the presence of heat without radiating it. There’s a smouldering intensity contained by a cool outer casing that give the tracks a very particular attitude, with certain key instruments being recorded and used unsequenced, without edits or quantization that raise the curtain on side A. Any track entitled Helen in the Keller needs to be approached with a certain amount of caution and the glassy shards of warping live bass guitar together with Troy’s raw claustrophobic vocal musings create a dark tone as the lunatic fringe takes over. The track is essentially split into two halves, with the second introducing a low, oscillating Juno-60 style bass riff that merges with the hi-hat driven rhythm section to enhance the tracks danceability. From there on, all the elements gel perfectly creating a track that manages to harness the energy of a live performance with some instruments being recorded in one shot.

As collaborations go – it fits like a glove. Anyone who’s been following the trajectories of those involved should have no trouble spotting their individual contributions and how they compliment each other so effectively on these futuristic interpretations of bygone genres.

Really touched by all the support we've been receiving from everyone and so, so appreciative of it all. It's only been a short time we've been writing this story together but just the fact that doing the music we feel in our hearts manages to connect with so many other people is gratifying beyond words.
While this is certainly only the end of a chapter and the beginning of a much longer story, it's important for us to take a moment and take note of the things that matter. Beyond polls and numbers (which are transitory as all in life is) it's the downright love we've felt from so many that has truly left a lasting mark on us both.
So as a little token of thanks we're offering a free download of our unreleased Straight To Your Head remix which many people have been asking us about this past year.
It feels like a nice way to close this chapter as we begin to start the next.

Lil Kenny and the $hebangs - Straight to your Head (Tale of Us remix)

Jake Fairley AKA Fairmont has been pioneering forward thinking electronic music for well over a decade now, working alongside heavyweight labels such as Border Community, Traum Schallpletten and most recently My Favorite Robot Records who released his third artist album November 2012. The LP, ‘Automaton’ received
broad critical acclaim with praise heaped on it by publications such as Mixmag, DJ Mag, Groove, Tsugi and Faze magazine and select cuts from the album began to show up in the charts of a number of leading DJs. Now Fairmont & My Favorite Robot Records have decided to collect together a series of remixes of some of the leading lights from the LP, reworked by some of their favourite producers, the results are here on ‘Automaton Remixes 1’ with a 2nd remix package scheduled to follow later this year.

The EP kicks off with ‘Last Dance’, a key cut from the album which now gets overhauled by remix heavyweight Ewan Pearson. Pearson’s remix credentials needed little introduction having been a go-to man for the likes of Depeche Mode, Metronomy, Hot Chip etc as well as numerous dance acts. Here he takes ‘Last Dance’ and works it into an epic ten minute electronic anthem as only Mr Pearson knows how, simply stunning!

Following hot on his heels, Ryan Crosson picks up the remix baton and sets about transforming ‘Alkaline’ into a brilliantly understated slice of leftfield techno with a light and airy feel to it. The third mix sees Factor City's Undo remix ‘Fate’, turning in a slo-mo electro influenced piece of electronica that marries Fairmont’s song structure with some intense and moving production. The penultimate mix sees recent MFRR convert Arthur Oskan gets to grips with ‘Tiny Diamonds’ delivering a remix that pulses and purrs with it’s arpeggiated synth
lines bringing a truly uplifting quality. Finally we close the package as we started it with remix overlord Ewan Pearson delivering an instrumental version to sit against his remix.

With the recent Jori Hulkkonen remix package fresh in the memory and now this stunning selection of Fairmont mixes it’s clear that My Favorite Robot Records are becoming very adept at picking the right remixer for the right job. ‘Automaton remixes 1’ is a must have collection for all lovers of quality electronic music.
