The Web of Time

For this arrangement, I took a traditional Irish folk song and attached a historical event to it. This song is modeled after the story of a man who leaves for America from Ireland in the 1840’s to escape the potato famine. He is forced to separate from everything he ever knew in order to find work in America to assure the survival of his family. Throughout the song, I attempted to paint multiple different scenes; him gazing at the countryside of Ireland and realizing that he has to leave his home, the passionate goodbye between the man and his family, and the heartbreaking sadness and uncertainty that comes with not knowing what his life will hold in the years to come. Towards the end, I included a scene of him embarking from Ireland and sailing across the ocean to America. On this trip, he has a realization that he is doing this for the betterment of his family, and he views his new situation with a more positive perspective. At the end, he arrives in America, and although it is different, he knows he will find his way with the love for his family pressing him on.

I wrote this song for my cousin as she was preparing to leave on a mission trip to Costa Rica. I attempted to embody her beauty and grace, as well as her personal triumphs and struggles in this composition; it is a tangible symbol of the intangible differences she makes with her golden heart.

I wrote this song for my other cousin, Savannah, as she was preparing to leave on a mission trip to Eastern Europe. I attempted to capture the excitement of seeing new things and changing new people, as well as the overall sentiment that she was where she was supposed to be, doing what she was supposed to be doing. Many of the melodies in this piece have served as a reminder that where I'm at in my life is exactly where I belong.
