This episode is a little different from our normal program - an extended version of the mix streamed last week during the Sphere Radio collaborative Cultural Affairs program.

One of the goals of the Island Time show on Sphere Radio was to find new ways to tell stories of migratory culture through music. Our specific focus has been on the shared musical space between Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. On this brief episode, we present a selection of music dedicated to the cult-figure of Yemọja/Iemanjá/Yemayá , the Yoruba orisha of the surface of the ocean, who through the atrocity of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade came to the new world through the enslaved peoples of the Caribbean, South America, southern Untied States, and more, maintaining status and power even as she shape-shifted to fit Catholicism and other impositions.

Her story, or rather stories, speak to a type of power that is mysterious and beautiful, here relayed through musicians playing in genres ranging from Nigerian juju, salsa boricua, afro-cuban jazz and beyond. It is also worth mentioning that two songs included in this selection are dedicated to Mami Wata, a similar feminine water deity from West Africa, who shares much in common with Yemayá. While not originating out of Yoruba religion, she offers an expanded context that I think is valuable in recognizing.

Originally a water color, this digital rendering of Yemayá is based on several Yoruba practices from West Africa to the Caribbean and South America. Her crown is made of the leaves of the yagrumo plant, one of the plants used in her rituals, and the attire is based on the Virgen de Regla, who is often used to synchronize Yemayá's image. The image represents the colors and icons attributed to Yemayá: turquoise and red, along with the moon, boat helm and cowry shells. Since she controls the seas and oceans, we depict her controlling the fate of two ships: a drowning schooner Clotida to the right, the last ship to transport enslaved Africans to the United States and on the left a contemporary ship of East African privateers. Yemayá is depicted guiding the ship of privateers who carry poor people trying to survive, while sinking the ship on the right after it made its last voyage, with it ending the painful transportation of enslaved people. Instead of depicting a clear humanly figure, we chose to portray her as a body of water; full of movement and force. This watercolor was created by the visual artist José Ortiz-Pagan for Colectiva Clara, a collective of candle makers, herbal concotionists and dreamers, of which he is a member.

Utilising heavily the sounds of modular synths and home-built drum machines, Hormone Lemonade still keeps the loose, improvised sound familiar to fans of their first two albums, with minimal guitar melodies and live drum kit helping to build hypnotic layers of texture. An album that promises to be full of "experiments, improvisations, and refinements" and with Cavern at the controls, surely to be one of the year's best.

Bleep Mix #20 - Tim Gane ‎(Flashing Noise Mix)

"On this 6-track album, the musical world of Golden Ivy comes full circle as he introduces these seemingly different elements to each other. On one hand, there is the cold precision of programmed rhythms pulsing through the base layers: echoes of the urban industrial cityscape in which it functions. On the other hand, the sliding howls across the strings of the violin reaches much further out into the wilderness. And still - melded together - they manage to convey a feeling of “home”.

Taking inspiration from the fourth world concept of Jon Hassel, Ivar finds a delicate path where influences of folk music from various cultures can be captured and contained within a modern frame of mind. The violin and flute are present throughout the album like a red thread. Perhaps they are the perfect instruments to capture the melancholy, isolation and beauty of being alone with nature, and of being home in oneself.

But there’s also Ivars jovial sense of humour that peers through, for instance on the pirate fantasy of “Long John Silver” or the jittery bounce of “Game Vän”. Oddball touches of lefthanded debauchery pass by here and there, but the focus remains on simplicity and repetition. The compositions are focused and tightly harnessed to the rhythms which carry them. "

We're very honoured to welcome Paris based DJ & Producer D.K (@d-k-music) into our family ashram.

Some of you may know him via his previous releases on Antinote, Jonny Nash's label 'Melody of Truth' or more recently his split EP via Second Circle.

He's also the melodic mystery man behind those jacking 45 ACP releases via dear brother Ron Morelli. 

Though here on this 38 minute cassette, aptly titled 'The Goddess is Dancing', D.K. delves back into his ancestral Vietnamese past & blesses us all with 6 originally composed tracks that pay homage to the mysterious shamanistic dance of 'Hau Dong'.

As explained by D.K. here....

"This tape is an imaginary interpretation of the music used in Vietnam’s ancestral/spiritual possession rituals called 'Hau Dong'. It’s a ceremony in 5 parts, whereby spirit mediums dance on each song to honor the mystical goddesses of Forest, Water and Heaven. Whilst dancing during these rituals, the Medium's appear to transform themselves into different characters....changing their personalities, as if various spirits have entered their bodies."
