This album is a celebration of curiosity and trust.
During 2020 and 2021 I composed numerous pieces in my studio - poured my heart and soul out to music in challenging times. I sent these improvisations to other musicians whom I trusted. No instruction given but to record only one take, following their intuition.

The right people were in the right place. This odd situation of not-being-together created a powerful mediated togetherness; opened spaces for the sceneries, meditations, musical paintings, outbursts, contemplations of this album - Atolls of human beings expressing themselves through music in times of separation. This album unites 5 of these comforting and wild territories - in an adventurous piece of art that funnels our curious approach in music into visible form - driven by the spirit of music.

Leipzig, April 15th, 2024

THE TREES, THEY GROW SO SLOW is the result of dozens of beautiful encounters with trees in 2020 and 2021. Those were strange times back then, weren’t they? But all the isolation did me one good: it slowed me down. I took hour-long walks every day, carrying our newborn child. I loved walking under trees, looking up — feeling the sunbeams glimmer through the leaves, hearing their whispers. They grow so slowly; strong and steady. A fascinating miracle: the calm, intimidating strength of a being so durable and slow, yet contradicted by its sheer vulnerability in the face of human impact.

As I started working on the basic tracks for TREES, I had no idea it was about my personal relationship with trees. It just happened, in the late summer of 2021, that I encountered a 300+ year-old oak tree whilst traveling. Fascinated by the unbelievable complexity of its leaves whispering in the waves of wind, I made hours of field recordings. I knew they needed to be in the piece that I called THE TREES, THEY GROW SO SLOW that day.

This piece is dedicated to the fact that every being on this planet originated from the same single cell in an ocean some 2.5 billion years ago. The trees you hear on this record — and yourself — are the offspring of that same one-celled ancestor, nearly washed away by the currents of time.

Music is also everywhere, inside us, around us, even if we don't hear it. Fields

In 2020-2022, when I recorded the ATOLLS album, I started with layers of upright bass, electronics and tapes, alone in my studio. Afterwards, I gave these tracks to musicians whose work I loved and whom I trusted. I told them: "Please improvise whatever you feel to my Music. That will be the exact right thing - all it needs for beauty." 

It was the biggest pleasure, to witness a beautiful stream of musical landscapes and meditations grow from this simple impulse. The process apparently formed the album ATOLLS: A wholeness that transcended its singular pieces. 

Somewhen along the way of finishing the album, I asked myself "Why stop exploring here?" I was curious what other musicians would do with our final recordings... I handed the finished tracks of TINY OBJECTS to a variety of great musicians: "Just take this and do what you feel you should do with it."

The result is in your hands - an exciting album of immersive ambient, wild electro-punk, vibrating drum & bass Music and so much more! A surprising wholeness born from the spirited minds of blessed creative people.
We are part of a bigger unity. We start feeling it, the moment we open our hearts and  souls to listen truthfully.

DISTANT SKY is a collaborative radio composition and musical intervention by Leipzig based band leader, composer and improviser Malo Moray and Bristol based label founder, musician, songwriter and educator Bethany M. Roberts. Reacting to the separation of Europe through right wing conservatives, this compostion builds a bridge between Leipzig and Bristol.
DISTANT SKY is a dense dark ambient composition lead by Malo Moray's sophisticated upright bass playing through electronics and Bethany M. Roberts virtuos violin playing uniting her folk and avantgarde influences.
Supported by Kulturamt der Stadt Leipzig, a limited edition of 250 tapes will be available in public spaces in Leipzig and Bristol on July 6th. Visit @malomoray and @bethanymrobertsmusic on Instagram this Thursday to find your copy in Bristol or Leipzig.
