The indicative pronouns in modern Japanese are organized in a neat system of "ko, so, ah, do" as in "kono, it, that, or dore" for things, "ko here, so there, ah there, or either (koko, soko, ah there, ah there, or dore)" for directions, and "koko, soko, asoko, or doko" for places. This phenomenon can be seen not only in nominal words, but also in the tenses "such, such, such, such, what" and "this, that, that, that, which" as well as in the adverbials "ko, so, ah, do". The "ko" series indicates near names, the "so" series indicates middle names, the "a" series indicates far names, and the "do" series indicates indefinite names. Kanae Sakuma called this the "kosoado" system. The "ko" indicates that the speaker is in the speaker's sphere of influence, the "so" indicates that the listener is in the listener's sphere of influence, and the "a" indicates that the listener is outside the sphere of influence of both speakers and listeners.
