The 6th episode of Jamming with Malzof shares the fun and gorgeous sounds of Deee-Lite, including some of the member’s other music projects. Deee-Lite is possibly most well-known for their multi-genre Groove Is In The Heart (released August 1990), and their assortment of dance hits with plenty of remixes. This episode also highlights other works by the band members, including beautiful jungle from Emerald Cricket (Ani Schempf and Dmitri Brill with Paola Dinola), some dance remixes from Supa Dj Dmitry featuring vocals of Ursula Rucker and Julee Cruise (z”l); as well as some breakbeat and downtempo from Towa Tei / Sweet Robots Against The Machine. Today's 9th episode of Jamming With Malzof shares music from many Jewish musical traditions, including contemporary sounds by Jewish musicians and music created in solidarity of Jewish, Palestinian and Black liberation. While this episode airs on the anniversary of kristallnacht (which was 84 years ago in 1938), it also airs in the context of emboldened antisemitism, anti-Black racism and persistent oppression of Palestinians. This music shares prayers for the dead, affirmations of our futures, hopes of liberation, community together in sound, expressions of grief and the violent loss of culture and place. Genres span the sounds of klezmer and mizrahi music, jazz, dub, experimental, punk and more.

Shana Tova Shofar Blast with Malzof (Refuge Worldwide: Thu 14 Sep 2023)

Purelink have been described more than once as an "ambient boy band." (They themselves say "jam band.") It's not meant dismissively—the American trio purposefully mean to function as a band, even if their main instruments are laptops. Ambient might not quite cut it as a descriptor, though. The group's music crosses eras and scenes, touching on the late '90s clicks & cuts boom as well as the billowy ambient techno put out by labels like 3XL, West Mineral Ltd. and NAFF. 

Their most recent LP, Signs, released on enigmatic imprint Peak Oil (and one of our favourite albums of 2023), is especially impressive, made of stuttering rhythms and glassy textures. In other words, it's ambient-not-ambient. While members Concave Reflection, kindtree and Millia have all made excellent music on their own, something special happens when they come together.

Purelink's RA Podcast is another stellar contribution to our post-New Year's tradition, where we highlight a more laid-back sound to soothe weary minds and frazzled brain cells after the heavy holiday celebrations. This is 90-plus minutes of intricately textured downtempo, dub techno and even UK garage, all cut through with a floaty, almost drowsy quality, with plenty of exclusives and unreleased cuts from the likes of Nick León, James K, Downstairs J and more. It highlights Purelink's position as a bridger of worlds, sounds and tempos.

"Beneath the cold and iced ledges inside a cavernous cutout through the mountain, an eternal flame blazes and heats the air. The heat circulates the cave. A nearby river splashes into the cave, periodically hitting its flame, never enough to put it out, but just so that it conducts a great steam. A deep reddish hue glows from the flames, blurred with the steam, its bright halo spills out of the cave. 

Beings across the starscape know about this spot. They fly, swim, teleport and dance into it. The sounds of their movements, murmurings and exhales become one with the cycle of heat ensnaring the space.

A large stick brought into the cave by wind strikes the wall, which carries the vibrations and sounds of the heat, pressure, cold waves, and steam cycling. Its sound reverberates from the atoms of the heat and echoes on the walls of the cave. The sound carries across the cold water channel, outward into the depths of the unknown.

Listening through a seashell on the other end of the ocean, is a being playing in the sound, called to hold up the shell to their ear and hear how it was forged. The creatures of the ocean swim through certain sections of the water, where they know the transmission will be reverberant. Like swimming through radio signals, the path from the cave is well traveled.

You are now traveling through the water’s transmission carrying the sound."

Malzof is a DJ and Intermedia Artist based in Pittsburgh, USA and a resident of Sweet Abyss. Malzof plays abstracted grooves- weaving together melodies and rhythms across genre, BPM and era into sonic journeys. Spanning ambient, experimental, broken beat and multiple genres of house, techno and beyond, their sets enchant the dance floor with blissed out beats, fun and freaky vocals, psychedelic percussions and environmental sounds.

With a creative background in video production, live visuals and installation art since the late 2000s, Malzof has taken inspiration from their live performance style to inform the ways in which they DJ, make music and engage with the audience. Starting off with abstract acid house, weaving into dub, freestyle and new beat, returning to the source of disco, 
Malzof takes us on an elemental ride. Their style is captured throughout the mix as it emits a liberating yet emotional feel shared across the genres and origins of dance music.

Malzof is an explorative intermedia artist based in Pittsburgh. Their background consists of multitudes of an audio-visual experience: video production, live audio + visuals, installation art, DJing and beyond. Pittsburgh’s finest Sweet Abyss provides a curatorial medium for Malzof to highlight the expansiveness of transgender dance music.

Advice for the DJs, artists and producers of our community: Don't be afraid to try out new mediums. Keep sharing your ideas and voice. Collaborate with friends and artists that you respect, provide them feedback and mentor each other. Gain ownership over space and do what you want with it. Take space where you can and remember your greatness and worth, even while the world tries to take that from you/us. Be unrelenting in all media. Take breaks when you want to and don't feel guilty about taking time for yourself. Taking care of yourself always comes first.

This Rave Scout implements the same themes of community, solidarity, personal enrichment, and accessibility throughout all their endeavors. Malzof's music is influenced by synesthesia, the connection between seeing, hearing, and feeling.
