Outside the Dream

What once made sense 
Falls to my feet

And what I used to think 
Now dissolves like a dream

History once believed,
now the sun has bleached

A web of lies
Surrounds what we see

Nothing was ever real,
All made to deceive

edge of night

Darkness increases,
swallowing the light

We scramble like rats
Fight each other for scraps

False lights explode,
To douse our fright

This coming storm 
Feels like the end

As wheat and tares

What can I say? When we deaden our senses and feelings with trivial self-indulgent trinkets we lose sight how temporary life is, how beautiful each day is ...we take for granted what we have and lose sight of what we can be

you slam on your brakes cause the light just changed
now you'll be late for your afternoon game
you curse your bad luck and how this traffic stop
has ruined your entire day

you stand in line with a cart full of things
that you don't want and that you don't need
but you buy anyways out of boredom and greed
and this line is too long
it's always too long
and the radio NEVER plays a good song
what a rotten day this turned out to be

today the sun is beaming down
but that makes it too hot to run around
but then it's too cool when the sun goes away
so you end up spending most of your days
staying home alone on your couch
cursing the weather and your bad luck

a child in Gaza plays with his toys
in the rubble and dust of somebody's home
then his head jerks up and his heart skips a beat 
when he hears the drone fly overhead
but it falls to the ground 2 blocks from his street
the child gives out a big sigh of relief
and goes back to playing with his toys
yes today is a great day filled with great joy

a young girl sings along with the band
at a concert given in Jerusalem
but her hair stands up and she snaps back her head
when she hears a loud crack from somewhere in back
but it's only a bottle of soda she sees
she's relieved to go home when the music is done
no one's been tortured or slaughtered today
It's been a great day for sure

life is precious
no time to waste
but unfortunately we realize both too late
