When you called me this morning – the sound on your end – was so deafening – I got scared –tried not to act weird – Do I run to your place – your butt dial said everything – I bet right now that you wish I wasn’t listening

The fact we can communicate with other people (in real-time or across centuries) through music, is extraordinary. Dating from 1787, Mozart's String Quintet in G minor K.516 speaks to me of very real hardship he endured towards the beginning of the end of his life. And when he was in hell, he kept going (he continued to compose). His later String Quintet in D major K.593 (always two violas) is infused with beauty so delicate it can only have been the result of hope...likely because by now he is so powerful (musically if not monetarily) he simply replaces despair with hope as a function of sheer determination, within a musical space over which he holds dominion. So powerful by this point he literally creates his own reality, with effect that his entire life has become an act of creation (the aim of all true artists). He knew a great many fears, most of which never happened. After he figured out that the vast majority of events he feared never actually happened, fear and despair were replaced by hope and courage. For completeness, his much earlier String Quintet K.174 in B Flat major does not seem to me to form part of his opera of more profound String Quintets (K. 406, 515, 516, 593 and 614) perhaps because his much earlier effort (K.174) was merely an experiment (which I suspect, though do not claim to know). My point? Why talk about yourself, when you can talk about Mozart?
