It is consistently the highlight of my summer to squeeze so much bliss into a set and see the smiles and tears that flow as so many of you resonate with the sounds and emotions. the leader of the family, I was taking notes
we all were, she was our inspiration
influencing us, even in our temptations

she loved to smoke, so did most of the family
when I started, noone got mad at me
I quit once that she got COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
she quit too and saved breath for two years
but relapsed at the death of her peer
Before long, she got the big C
it tore through my heart like a pair of ripped jeans

When she was dying I saw true bravery
the type of courage that in life you rarely see
the greatest super heroes don't even compare to me
personifying grace for everyone who was there to see
those last few days at the paliative care centre
she got so many patients to care about her
the nurses too, so made so many friends
in such a short time as she was facing the end

sitting on the balcony the last day we spoke
talking about life as she was having a smoke
the gratitude she had for the life she was given
the gifts that she had to pass to her children
so much strength, was there in her wisdom
the insights she shared, I will miss them
but they will live inside of me to channel
as I try my best to live by her example
