The derivatives market consists of futures or options (or options on futures) which derive from other assets (i.e. stocks, debt, commodities). Everyone has access to it, but the common person doesn't understand the complexity behind it. Trading derivatives offers greater leverage thus higher yield. This also means greater risk. As was the issue in 2008, they were trading derivatives on the debt of mortgage loans. These loans were very risky (as we learned) and thus made bankers big bucks. The issue isn't as much derivatives as it is encouraging the underlying asset which leads to big profits from the derivative being traded. Because it’s the banks profiting off the derivative trading, while at the same time handing out “risky” loans, they’ll once again be more likely to put the regular person in a situation to make a risky loan, because in the end they can profit off of it… and if they fuck up they now have a safety net.
