The Upsetters vs Rival - One Step Off The Rave

NIKO IS brings us his first project of the year, GOOD BLOOD, a precursor to his long awaited BRUTUS LP. The title is the literal English translation of the Brazilian term, 'Sangue Bom'. Good Blood is mostly produced by Thanks Joey of The Prescription apart from a cut by Krikos and a self-produced NIKO IS record. Thanks Joey invokes the continuously evolving Brazilian sample-heavy style of hip hop production, for which he has become known for. The project will feature the rapgenius released 'Ballon d'Or', along with many other stand outs. The up and coming wordsmith is fresh off forging an alliance with industry veteran Talib Kweli and his Javotti Media imprint, alongside DJ Smallz and his Southern Smoke brand. With this sort of backing and a relentless ethic to get better with every release, 2014 will be nothing short of spectacular for the big haired Brazilian.

Jazz-influenced harmonics and tech-inspired roots mix to create the distinct and eclectic sounds of audioJazz. DJ Bai-ee and musicians Dirty Turk and K Koltz collaborate to create imaginative music inspired by the house scenes of NYC and Chicago. The audioJazz sound is deeply rooted in house music’s past but feels like something soon to come, ‘future old school’ if you will. The trio has ties to New York and Oakland but came together in Chicago, bringing each of their pronounced influences to the group. The result is an exploratory selection of deep house with an inclusive attitude, often featuring vocalists and musicians from across the country. 

Following up on last year’s acclaimed “Momentum” single, audioJazz continues to showcase the diversity of their collective with four tracks of dissimilar style in the Contortion EP. “Cats Like That” combines classic jazz elements with a subtle drum swing, an echoing piano riff, and a bellowing bassline, accented by the narration of Roy Hardgrove. “Tech Again” peppers hypnotic bells across a dark minimal soundscape building into a mysterious atmosphere suiting the darkest of warehouses. “Black Dragon” features memorable keys chiming over heavy swinging drums as the sharp pad stab and room-shaking bass line break to highlight a haunting bridge and vocal drop. The final cut, “Your Love is Liquid,” brings soothing downtempo vibes like a pleasing afterglow. Christina Tamayo’s seductive vocal combines with engaging lyrics as trickling pianos and lush pads ride on top of a rolling sub-bass motif.

A Lee Scratch Perry Production and Jack Frost staple, Cold Weather was released in 1972 on the album Double Seven. The band included guitarist Alva Lewis, organist Glen Adams and brothers Aston "Family Man" Barrett and Carlton Barrett, on bass guitar and drums respectively.
 When the Barrett brothers became Wailers with Bob Marley by 1972, Scratch brought in other top musicians to fill their void. The main Black Ark Upsetters became Boris Gardiner (bass), Mikey Richards, Sly Dunbar, Benbow Creary (drums), Earl "Chinna" Smith (guitar), Winston Wright (keyboards) and Keith Sterling (keyboards).
