Dig Me Out

On the heels of their April release ‘Dig Me Out’ - an emotional and heavy-hearted ode to the lost children of North American residential schools - Miesha and The Spanks are ready to shed some weight and break into summer with high energy new single “I Can’t Wait."

Known for their bold and explosive sound, “I Can’t Wait” sees the pair deliver a fun and raucous slice of garage-rock gold, brimming with vibrant textures. Produced by The Buzzcocks’ Danny Farrant and channeling their diverse array of power-pop and punk influences, this new release sees Miesha & The Spanks in renewed spirits - a taste of what’s to come as they work to complete their upcoming full length album. “I Can’t Wait” can be heard on season 2 of Rutherford Falls, now streaming on Peacock TV in the U.S.

On their new single, Miesha Louie says, “‘I Can’t Wait’ is meant to be a sweet summer jam, somewhere between a fond callback to summer shenanigans and daydreaming about what’s coming up next. We’ve got some laid-back garage beats, big gang vocals and oohs, hand claps, tambourine - good vibes are all over this one.”

“I think writing ‘I Can’t Wait’ was a particular challenge. It’s a song with so many good parts and it’s hard to not overplay on everything,” Sean Hamilton elaborates on the recording process, “It would be fun to have rippin’ drum fills over all the pauses and screeching lead guitar over the chorus - but just getting out of the way of how the song naturally wanted to settle was the right thing to do.“

“Stranger EP” is made up of two new Miesha & The Spanks singles featuring new Spanks arrangement with Sean Hamilton on drums. 

“Motorin’” and “Stranger” are the first recordings released in collaboration with Paul Rawson and Danny Farrant (The Buzzcocks) in the producers’ chair. Their input and influence shaped the consistent gritty rock sounds of Miesha & The Spanks with nods to 50s girl group romanticism and tonality shifts in the vein of Queens of The Stone Age. 

“Stranger EP” is a pre-cursor for more to come from that collaboration, as the team spends the rest of 2016 recording and fine-tuning for the 2017 release of Miesha & The Spanks’ next full length album.

“I Want Fire” started with a chorus. 🔥 

That was enough to get our producer Leeroy Stagger all fired up: “I remember hearing the demo for this and just being bowled over. The chorus is so damn strong and catchy, if there was any justice in this world this song would be a hit.” 

Written during the early stages of the pandemic, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to burn down, but something needed to go. My maternity leave should have ended, so I could go on tour and play rad festivals with my husband on parental leave. But suddenly we were two stay at home parents with two six month old babies, unable to perform or socialize, confined to the same routine, getting in each other’s space and driving each other crazy. As I wrote, it became less about burning down what was pissing me off and more about lighting up my own fire and getting back to our normal. 

Nearly a year from when this whole mess started, a lot of pent-up frustration remains, and if people haven’t already, they are ready to explode. When I practice this song, I still feel that. But yelling the anthem helps get it out. I hope it works for you, too.

I Want Fire

“Mixed Blood Girls" is the powerful fourth track from upcoming Singles EP out on April 16, 2021. 

“It’s (some of) my story as a mixed Secwépemc girl from the East Kootenays,” Miesha informs. “My dark skin and white features left me open to compliments on my ‘beautiful tan’ and when they found out it wasn’t, I was ‘too pretty to be an Indian.’ From ballet moms to dudes in bars, I’ve heard it all.” Mixed Blood Girls opens with full force and plays hard and heavy the whole way through.

Producer Leeroy Stagger says, "When Miesha sent over the demo for MBG I immediately got excited to record it. It’s a very important message but it also rocks pretty hard like all my favourite songs do. It also once again demonstrates her amazing ear for melody.
