Im Gegensatz zu seinen kraftvollen technoiden Releases auf Moonplay Records zeigt sich Jens Lewandowski auf Supdub Digitales stets von seiner melodiösen Seite. Ein Beleg dafür ist seine neuste EP. Funny Face überzeugt durch eindringlich treibende Beats gepaart mit klar klangvollen Vocals. Ergänzt wird die Ende März erscheinende Platte von einem Remix von Oliver Schleenvoigt und einem weiteren klassischen gefühlvollen Lewandowski-Track.

In contrast to his powerful technoid releases through Moonplay Records, Jens Lewandowski’s work with Supdub Digitales consistently shows his more melodic side. Proof of this is his latest EP. Funny Face satisfies through its steadily pounding beats paired with clear melodious vocals. The track, to be released late March, will be supplemented with a remix by Oliver Schleenvoigt and an additional classic lyrical track by Lewandowski.

A couple of days ago, I attended the monthly meeting for the Seattle Electronic Music Producers Association (SEMPA) for the first time.  The guest presenter for the evening was Jon Lee of Tilted Records.  And he showed us some of his work flow in creating a house track, worthy of club play or party play.  

It was my first time, really, interacting with anyone else in public about music production.  It was important, I thought, to get more involved with meat space--and not just live an isolated life connected to other people only through social media.  

My intention with this track was to see what would happen if I used Jon's workflow.  To see if a different process could lead to different results.  

yeeah...that worked for the first hour or so, and then I Interbayed all over the project.  (Naturally.)  

From the rate at which I produce and post music, you might guess that I work pretty fast and loose--and you'd be right.  I don't spend a lot of time agonizing over the specific snare sound that I need to use in a specific situation.  It can lead to wonderful randomness or complete messes that could be improved with a remix or sound substitution.  

From the word go, Jon had a better and more club worthy kick than I feel I've ever managed.  I don't know what his process was for determining what would work best--other than experience.  (I don't think it is better tools--but it certainly could be knowing more about how to use those tools.)  

For whatever reason, I hear "Jeopardized" and I think the kick or maybe the kick/bass combination, sounds too..."round" (that's the best way I can describe it) than what Jon anchored his demonstration track to...and that dissatisfaction with my own choices may have colored what decisions I made after making those choices.  

I guess you could say that I was in danger of jeopardizing my mission simply by working on it.  

...then I remembered.  This is an Interbay track.  There aren't any expectations, much less any rules.  It will be what it will be.  

Which will be Interbay.  

I did manage to keep my hands (mostly) off the vocal sample--letting it be the only one used and not to stutter edit it or to otherwise overload it with tricks, ear candy, and extreme effects.  (And I bet many of you recognize exactly where Icarus sourced it from...)  

This may be the "purest" I've ever managed to creating tech house.  We're not talking Ivory soap "pure"...but relative to the Interbay back catalog, I think I'm right.  

If yesterday's silliness wasn't to your taste, you might give "Jeopardized" a shot and find something more up your alley.  (...and yes, I do need to drop a post-punk or other rock/guitar-centric track soon.)  

Thanks to Jon, Mindy, and a couple of new friends I made that night.  If I haven't annoyed you too much, you should see and hear from me more often.
