The song confronts the illusion of separation between capitalism in the United States and the violence felt within its own borders (i.e.school shootings, mass shootings, serial killers ,obsession of true crime documentaries ,etc), and the violence felt throughout the world in genocides (such as Congo , Palestine , Sudan , and other indigenous lands threatened by the force of colonialism and imperialism) .
. They are not two different things happening for two separate  reasons . They are fundamentally entwined and their existence celebrates that connection. 
Stocks like Raytheon and J.P. Morgan go up as sales for the weapons they produce are being used more to defeat whoever the enemy is this week . 
The money spent to go to war is given on condition that the spoils of war make up a larger profit . That will be collected in resources such as gas , oil , cobalt , sea and docking ports  ,control of a global trade route and stolen land .
If violence is permissible on a wide scale level as described , then the school shootings are merely carnival mirrors for how the west treats people , even its own citizens.

you never talk about it is a song  that depicts the apathy felt around the world when violence hits our phone screens , genocide is being live streamed to earth , school shootings are common risk in american school systems yet we are all supposed to pretend that these violent murderous acts arent directly tied to imperialism and capitalism in the western world , supposedly the most civilized of all world cultures.
