Rose is a folk pop song about running into an ex at a party. That shit is such a downer. The song weaves a delicate tapestry of guitars and percussion that builds in intensity to an all out frenzy as Sean and Bailey solo together on guitar and drums. It’s pretty neat. Listen for Bailey saying “aw shit” at the end, cause they rocked it so hard.

Rose

In Japanese, Johatsu means “evaporated people”. The song is about the acceptance of death, and coming to terms with mortality. In the short time span of their first meeting, both Bailey and Sean’s dogs passed away, and then Sean’s grandma died. This is a song to celebrate all of them. We love and miss you guys.

This song is about dating a wannabe movie director, and about Ryan Gosling. These things are unrelated, but Sean wanted to squeeze as many references to Ryan Gosling movies in the lyrics as possible. Can you spot them all? The song serves as a centerpiece for the album, separating the first half and the back half. It includes an extended jam section perfect for a long midnight drive, with saxophone by Scott Box of the band Konda.

The Director

Sidewalking started as a piano riff Bailey had been sitting on for a while. This song is different from the rest of the album in terms of instrumentation. It includes synth bass, djembe, piano and most notably, an absence of electric guitars. The lyrics are inspired by first loves, and the expectations they set up for us throughout our lives. The vocals are inspired by hymnals typically found in church music.

Bailey was drunk. Sean was high. They made this song. It’s about aliens or religion or something. Who knows, just go with it.

Mango Cat is Sean (from Big Brutus) and Bailey (from Bathe Alone). They met in 2018, and said “Hey, you’re cool. Let’s make some tunes.” And then they did. Bailey likes dreampop and Sean likes folk, and they combined them to make dreamfolk? Space Folk? Who knows! All we know for sure, is it’s from the heart, and it sounds freaking cool. They will be releasing singles regularly through the summer in preparation for their first LP later this year.
