Power Drive 2000: Streets of San Secuestro

For this track I went back to my C64/Amiga roots. Yes, that's where it all started for me too. Working with Fasttracker or Protracker, having 4 lanes in which you could program samples. One song from the demoscene stood out for me, and it's this one by Norwegian, Jogeir Liljedahl. His song Guitar Slinger made such a profound impact on me and has such a human/acoustic feel, it still is one of, if not, the best 'modfiles' that's out there, period!

I attempted to remake it, keeping true to it's legacy yet adding a little bit of my own here and there. I hope you will all appreciate this remake? Greetings to all from the Commodore 64/Amiga demoscene... You know who you are!

"Stranglehold" came to be a couple of days before Christmas 1995 when I decided to take up the challenge to use only 1 sine wave sample to create an entire piece of music.  The only thing to be manipulated was the pitch and the volume of the sine waves.

According to quite a few people, the song started a whole new music genre, but I won't claim credit for that... or do I? ;-)

I used Fasttracker 2.08 (a tracker program) to compose the song.
At the time the most popular music tracker around.

The tune is 14622 bytes in file-size (15 KB) and has been extensively used in cracktro's, has been used to test and tweak mod-players like XMplay, Winamp, and the likes. There are many remixes of the song around. Just google for "Stranglehold Jeroen Tel (WAVE)."

The original file (XM module) can be found as "jt_strng.xm" (just google it) and is best played using XMplay (www xmplay com)

"Pools of Poison" is the winner of Music Contest #4 (Veteran section), organized by Hornet in 1996.

I tracked and released it under my tracker name "WAVE".

Special thanks to Snowman & GD for taking care of the organization at the time!

The module was tracked in Fasttracker 2.08 and the original XM file is -not accidentally- 700.000 bytes in size. :-)

This is a 1 on 1 render from XMPlay, with no added effects.

I uploaded it to SoundCloud so people can hear the music without having to download the XM module and install a special module player for playing it, as well as to make sure not a -wrong- module player is used, which doesn't play the XM effects and note-data correctly,

So, I’ve known Jake Kaufman for quite a while now. Mazedude and Virt first met in IRC, back around 1998. The teenagers were learning the art of tracking, and even competing in the art form via one- and two-hour compos, or even week-long groovy compos. (The game of the compo was to craft a track using only the provided sampleset, in a limited amount of time.) And while Mazedude had been tracking a little bit longer... dang, Virt picked up the nuances FAST!

Sorry to say, that even though I came in second place a few times, I never quite beat Jake at one of those. The guy was just too good. Regardless, a friendship was formed. At the time, we both had dreams of making music for movies. I went on to SUNY Purchase to get a bachelor’s degree in composition, and Jake went off the deep end in writing a TON of music, writing complete soundtracks for imaginary games, expanding his toolset WAY beyond tracking, and just putting it all out there. And, as you know by now, he succeeded. Me, my journey was different; I moved to LA to work on movies, did it, didn’t care for it as a job, and then flowed into building websites for movies instead... and then that shifted into a career that has paid the bills ever since. Although, before heading out, Jake and I did get to meet in person at the first MAGFest. That was cool.

Another quick side note: while in LA, the first date I ever had with Julia—now my wife of 10+ years—was at a Jake Kaufman chiptune concert.

So, on to the remix, and the tribute on American Pixels. When I first set out to add composers to the list of honorees who weren’t on the first American Album, I knew I wanted to include Jake. From the start, I was thinking a track from Shantae would be fun. Something ethnic, upbeat, and a nod to one of the games that helped put Jake on the map, so to speak. But, sorry to say... I wasn’t really digging any of the Shantae remixes I was starting (and I started a few). Then over time I realized that I was actually enjoying listening to the Mighty Switch Force soundtracks more frequently, just in the background while I worked and such. Simultaneously, tracks were coming together for the album, and it was obvious that a lot of them had a somewhere darker edge to them, which I needed to balance out. So, this was one of the last tracks I put together for the album actually; taking the main theme from Mighty Switch Force 2, slowing it down, and keeping it positive while still groovy.

At the same time, I wove in a lot of other Jake-related elements here. There’s a ballad he wrote for Royal "RS3" Sefton called “Light at the End,” and I used the electric piano from that to start off the piece. He wrote some goofy music for Kwakfest with a distinct flair to multiple synth solos; I mimic that here as well. There’s a compo where Jake, Chris “Beek” Hampton and I took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd; I used some sounds from our compo tracks in here too.

So while it’s a bizarre collection of diverse references, I’m very happy with the way the remix came out and I really enjoy listening to it. I hope you’ll enjoy it as well.

PS - Fun fact, this isn't the first time I've remixed Jake, actually; I also entered in a remix contest for Retro City Rampage a while back. I didn't win, but I still enjoy my Basehead-infused remix.

Supremacy (Tel Me More) W.I.P.  Update March 12, 2018

I worked through the entire weekend putting more and more things together on W.I.P. Supremacy... Also worked in, some of the feedback I got from several music friends (Thanks for that!)

I added the first addition of the recorded choirs (there will be more of that). In case you wonder? Yes, the voice is mine (dubbed as a choir many times over).

Still "missing" (intentionally):  The main lead arpeggio! /|/|/|
When they're there eventually, they will be eargasmic.
Save the best for last, right? xD

Jeroen Tel - Supremacy (preview 2)

I always felt that the Tel Me More project should have it's own theme, separate from the remakes, to honor my backers (contributors)... When I came up with the name "Tel Me More" I meant showing more of me, uncensored, pure and free. This is still a work in progress as it's formally called. I hope you guys and galls appreciate what I'm trying to achieve with my music for you... and also that this track shows some insight into my raw spirit.

It's also an ode to my "tracker friends" from all the way back!
(You know who you are!)

Jeroen Tel - TEL ME MORE Official Theme (preview)

Preview of the remake of the Highscore tune for the Commodore 64 videogame "Hawkeye" for the upcoming album "Tel Me More".

Composed in 1986 at age 14 and published by Thalamus in 1987. The game was developed by my friends the Boys Without Brains (BWB).

This was always one of my personal favorites and I felt it was the most accomplished short tune I composed for a C64 game.

I got reminded to remake this tune a lot in the many years passing since. When my friend and producer of many years, Joe Bonar, reminded me of it recently, I decided to drop working on all the other songs for a while and work on this one non-stop.
