 The term encapsulates the entire period of youth, including personal growth, intense emotions, and exciting experiences like falling in love. 

The characters are 青 (sei), meaning blue or green, and 春 (shun), meaning spring. The "blue" often represents "green" due to quirks in the history of Japanese color words, and "green" is used similarly to English to represent inexperience or immaturity.
