Beat engineer `manifolds' comes back from the depths of stasis with the “Tiles” EP, a 5-track expedition towards deeper, heavyweight styles of dubstep.

manifolds is the alias of Jacob Kosberg, a Long Beach-based music producer whose initial musical contributions in the mid-2010s included releases on Slo:Wave, radio plays on Plastician’s Rinse FM show, and a feature on VISION Radio. manifolds takes upon numerous sources of inspiration, from old-school dubstep with the grungy, industrial sounds of Distance to the razor sharp productions heard in Youngsta’s Minimal Mondays sets, as well as contemporary, interconnected scenes such as wave music, Low End Theory, and Soulection.

“Tiles” is the result of a time of unbridled creativity after a period of artistic hibernation, as manifolds states - “[seeing] deeper bass sounds emerging as one of the most popular genres in the US… was an incredible sight to see, because the commercial sounds were really dominating when I went dormant”. The producer cites going to Lightning in a Bottle in 2023 as the main driving force for re-introducing himself to bass music production, having focused on jazz music and drumming in the interim.

The final stable release is the result of months of fine tuning and numerous track variations. Steady rhythms and rolling b-lines combine with technoid sound design to produce quite delectable results. As manifolds states, “slower, consistent builds are hard to beat in terms of building energy, especially in a mix context”.

“Tiles” is played straight and yet subverts typical contemporary 140 tastes. It draws from influences old and new, and it gives equal care to atmosphere as much as bassweight. It is also perfect in any listening scenario, excellent for the headphones just as much as on a weighty sound system. This is a work of passion from someone who knows their history and craft well.
